(Boston): Riverside Press for Private Distribution, 1931. Edith Forbes Perkins was the daughter of the great American mariner and China trader, Robert Bennett Forbes. As such, her letters and journals record family doings that were, essentially funded by the epochal investment of China Trade capital into American railroads. In 1864 she married Charles Elliot Perkins, nephew of John Murray Forbes, Robert Bennett's brother. (Those bluebloods kept it tight.) J.M. Forbes also made his first fortune in the China Trade and invested it in railroads - one of the first American entrepreneurs to do so - resulting, natch, in an even bigger fortune. Charles Perkins followed his family connection into the railroad business, and eventually succeeded his uncle Forbes as President of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy railroad. Still more money! Where did it all go? Edith records 17 years of the distaff side of this family's adventures and, in so doing, has created a valuable social docuyment. Befitting her status as a classy dame, this is a beautiful and sumptuous production, printed for her by the Riverside Press, done up in purple cloth with tasteful gold decoration, and housed in a clasp-lock box of matching cloth. Inscribed by her daughter and editor, Edith Perkins Cunningham. Fine condition. Four volumes, 23.5 cm. Various pagination, b/w gravure plates. Edith Forbes Perkins was the daughter of the great American mariner and China trader, Robert Bennett Forbes. As such, her letter.
