Soft cover. Very good. Exhibits light wear along original fold lines. Blank on verso. Size 14.5 x 10 Inches. This is an 1873 John Murray map of eastern Persia, or modern-day south-central Iran. A thin red line highlights Sir Frederic John Goldsmid's route through the region from Bandar Abbas on the Strait of Hormuz north to Mash-had. Goldsmid was dispatched to this region in order to enforce a British-negotiated Selstan frontier boundary settlement, a move in the 'Great Game' intended to secure Persia and Afghanistan as buffer provinces between Russia and British India. The Goldsmid Boundary Mission A year earlier in 1872, Goldsmid headed a commission that negotiated a new boundary between Afghanistan and Persia - the Selstan frontier. The line stretched from Banda to Kuh-i-Malik Siah (a hill at the modern Afghanistan-Iran-Pakistan tripoint) and followed the Helmand River. Although Goldsmid was considered one of the foremost authorities on Persia and the Middle East in the British Empire, his attempts to settle the Selstan boundary dispute ill-considered, as they failed to take into account the natural shifts of the Helmand River, as well as shifting tribal allegiances. Moreover, it was impossible to please both sides, with the new boundary alienating both the Shah Naser al-Din Shah Qajar (1831 - 1896) and Afghan Emir Mohammad Yaqub Khan (1849 - 1923). Despite opposition on all sides, Goldsmid and a team were sent to Persia to enforce the 1872 Boundary Settlement. This was a diplomatic, not a military mission, and primarily involved Goldsmid attempting to convince local tribal leaders on both sides to accept the border. The mission left ill-feelings all around, with Yaqub Khan attributed it to the beginning to souring relations with the British - a degenerative series of diplomatic mis-steps that ultimately led to the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878 - 1880). The Great Game 'The Great Game' was a diplomatic confrontation between the British and Russian Empires over Afghanistan and other territories in Central and Southern Asia. The conflict, rooted in long-standing animosity between Russia and Britain, revolved around Afghanistan, which, while lacking significant resources of its own, was strategically situated. For its part, Russia feared Britain was making commercial and military inroads into Central Asia, an area long within the sphere of influence of St. Petersburg. Britain, conversely, feared Russia making gains in India, 'the jewel in the crown' of British Asia. The escalating tensions led to several wars and proxy wars: The First Anglo-Afghan War (1839 - 1842), the First Anglo-Sikh War (1845 - 1846), the Second Anglo-Sikh War (1848 - 1849), and the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878 - 1880), along with the Russian annexations of Khiva, Bukhara, and Kokand. Then as now, Afghanistan proved a grinding stone upon which the world's great empires diminished themselves, none achieving a definitive victory despite committing staggering resources. The Great Game 'ended' on September 10, 1895 with the signing of the Pamir Boundary Commission Protocols, which stabilized the border between Afghanistan and the Russian Empire - but well into the 20th century the British were well aware the conflict remained. Regarding the attitude of Afghans to the British and to the Russians, the general assumption of the British was that 'Some will fight for us, some against us, but all will fight.' Publication History and Census This map was created by John Murray and engraved by Edward Weller to accompany Goldsmid's article published in The Journal of the Royal Geographical Society in 1879. An empty OCLC reference exists for this map, suggesting it was cataloged by a former library cooperative member. An example is part of the institutional collection at Princeton University. PRINT: 390 x 520 mm. Paper: 457 x 610 mm. Creased cross-ways. Map outlined with original coloring. Excellent condition. First printing of this map. Nicolas Sanson (1600-1667), the "Father of French Cartography", was educated by the Jesuits at Amiens. He was soon recognized as having a gift for map drawing. As such by the age of ten he has produced his first map. "In 1627 he attracted the attention of Richelieu by a map of Gaul which he had constructed (or at least begun) while only eighteen." "Active from 1627, Sanson issued his first map of importance, the "Postes de France", which was published by Melchior Tavernier in 1632. After publishing several general atlases himself he became the associate of Pierre Mariette, a publisher of prints." [Wikip.] In 1630 he was appointed Geographe Ordinaire du Roy by King Louis XIII. As a geographer his most important work was his maps of the world, Cartes generales de toutes les parties du monde, issued in 1658, with later editions to follow. He died in 1667. Two younger sons, Adrien (d. 1708) and Guillaume (d. 1703), succeeded him as geographers to the king. / Nicolas Sanson's map was issued "by the author" (this version) and another version where his printer-publisher, Pierre Mariette, issued the map with his own imprint on the cartouche.…

Bellin, Jacques Nicolas. Ile d'Ormus ou de Jerun, 1747, depicts Hormuz and the surrounding Persian Gulf maritime landscape more than a century after an Anglo-Persian force ended Portuguese control of the island in 1622. Published in Histoire générale des voyages, the engraving identifies the Persian coast, islands, anchorages, fortifications, and channels while distinguishing Arab vessels from large-masted European sailing ships. Its concentration on ships, coastal defenses, and approaches to Hormuz records the strategic geography of a passage that connected Persian Gulf ports with Indian Ocean trading routes. Bellin, Jacques Nicolas. Ile d'Ormus ou de Jerun. From Histoire générale des voyages, 1747. Overall sheet size 13.5 x 9.5 inches; image size 7.5 x 9.75 inches. The upper portion identifies the "Cote de Perse," while inscriptions throughout the engraving include "Fortresse," "Ile de Kishom ou Quixema," "Entre des Vaisseaux," "Porte de derriere," "Parade Alkoran," "St. Lucia," and "Lardimira." Five Arab vessels occupy the foreground, while additional Arab shipping appears at left and European ships with tall masts and multiple sails appear at right. The fortified settlement on Hormuz includes the fortress associated with Portuguese occupation of the island. Hormuz had been seized in 1507 by the Portuguese commander Afonso de Albuquerque, and Portuguese control made the island a fortified base for regulating maritime commerce at the entrance to the Persian Gulf. The Portuguese constructed the Fort of Our Lady of the Conception there; in 1622, forces of Shah Abbas I, assisted by ships of the English East India Company, captured Hormuz and ended Portuguese rule on the island. Bellin's 1747 engraving therefore records a landscape shaped by earlier Portuguese fortification but returned to Persian control, while its juxtaposition of Arab and European vessels documents the continuing international maritime character of the strait. Paper folded three times, consistent with its original publication format. Overall very good condition.…

Very good. Faint waterstain; else excellent with original outline color. Size 12.75 x 15 Inches. This is an 1845 Johann Friedrich von Stülpnagel map of eastern North Africa, Arabia, and Persia, with an inset map detailing Abyssinia in East Africa. A Closer Look The map presents the Middle East in detail, from as far west as Derma on the coast of Libya to the Kathiawar Peninsula and Gujarat, India in the east. It includes the Mediterranean Sea east of Greece, the southern shore of the Caspian Sea, and southern Uzbekistan. The southern limits extend to cover the coast of Somalia; southern Sudan and Darfur are well-detailed. Arabia is mapped meticulously, particularly along pilgrimage routes to Mecca and Medina. The map's best detail is along the Nile River, especially the Blue Nile and its source at Lake Tsana in the Ethiopian Empire. This reflects current exploration as derived from Carl Zimmerman's 1843 survey, Karte zur Darstellung des Oberen Nillandes und des O?stlichen Mittel-Afrika . Publication History and Census This map was created by Johann Friedrich von Stülpnagel and published by Justus Perthes in the 1845 edition of Stieler's Hand-Atlas u?ber alle Theile der Erde atlas . Two examples of this 1845 edition appear in OCLC. The plate was much reworked and revised in 1867 for later editions of the atlas. References: OCLC 643291140.…

Very good. Faint offsetting, margin reinstated at insertion point. Size 13 x 21.5 Inches. This elegant 1753 Jonas Hanway map of Europe and the Near East illustrates the trade routes of British Russia Company, as proposed to the House of Lords in 1740. It was engraved in 1753 by John Gibson to accompany Jonas Hanway's account of his journey from Russia to Persia. Although not himself a company member, the merchant Hanway entered into partnership with member Robert Dingley (1710 - 1780). Thus, Hanway's routes taken in his 1743 journey hewed closely to the northern one proposed here. This route ran by sea to St. Petersburg and then by land to Tsaritsyn, Astrakhan and the Caspian Region. A southern route was also presented, from London via the Mediterranean to Syrma, and then to Persia via Asia Minor. The Russia Company Overshadowed by the sprawling British East India Company, the Russia Company was an extremely successful but surprisingly obscure mid-18th century joint-stock trading venture. Despite its imports into Britain rivaling those of the East India Company, the obscurity of its membership and political influence have led to the Company being ill understood by historians. The trade venture was fruitful: for example, Jonas Hanway made his fortune in partnership with Russia Company member Robert Dingley, thereafter exercising his wealth as a philanthropist. But the Company also furthered Britains strategic interests both in the Baltic, and began laying the foundations for the extension of British power in Central Asia. Elegantly Presented Gibson's engraving is beautifully executed, embellished with a fine compass rose and a dramatic, exotic cartouche, showing European merchants conversing with an Eastern potentate seated beside bales of silks. Publication History and Census The map was engraved by John Gibson in 1753 for inclusion in Jonas Hanway's An Historical Account of the British Trade over the Caspian Sea. We are aware of three editions of the work; this example appeared in the third. It is distinguishable from the early editions only by the typeset pagination in the upper border. We see eight examples of the complete work in institutional collections. We see only two examples of this map catalogued in OCLC, in the 1753 and 1754 issues respectively, at the National Libraries of Israel and Scotland. References: OCLC 999694916 (1753).…

Excellent, with a bold strike. Top margin close but not impacting border, else fine. Size 19.5 x 22.75 Inches. A superbly engraved 1719 Chatelain map of the Middle and Near East, presenting the ancient cities and kingdoms of those regions in the time of the Persian Empire and early Roman Empire. It spans from the eastern Mediterranean to the mouth of the Indus River. It centers on the Black and Caspian Seas, and embraces from the Persian Gulf to the full course of the Volga River. The map applies what was state-of-the-art geographical information to the place names of antiquity, thus placing the ancient eastern world in a more understandable context. The map shows ancient administrative divisions, regional names, major cities, towns and forts. Mountains and forests are shown pictorially. Extensive tables - one listing cities and towns, the other listing the prefectures and Dioceses at that time under the dominion of the Ottoman Empire - use a coordinate system to aid in finding the listed places on the map itself. The map was included in Chatelain's seven-volume historical atlas of the world, one of the largest and broadest Dutch encyclopedias of the early eighteenth century. In addition to its geographical information, it was a treasure trove of historical, political and even genealogical information. Chatelain's maps drew on the work of his day's finest geographers, including De l'Isle and De Fer. Publication History and Census Chatelain's Atlas Historique was published between 1705 and 1720; this map appeared in volume six, published in 1719. The Atlas Historique is well represented in OCLC, although this separate map is catalogued in only six institutional collections. The map appears in dealers' catalogues from time to time. Very good. Several marginal mends not impacting image; centerfold reinforced at bottom. Size 15.5 x 20 Inches. This is John Speed's map of Persia in its 1676 Bassett and Chiswell edition. This beautiful map is one of the most desirable early maps of the Near East, combining superb engraving, attractive Dutch styling, and entertaining and abundant English text. While Speed cannot be accused of innovation as a mapmaker, he was an accomplished historian and compiler. His atlases of the British Isles and the World are among the signal cartographic works of the 17th century. The Map The cartography for this map is drawn from the maps of Jodocus Hondius (whose student Goos engraved this map), but is unique among maps for its carte á figures borders depicting Persia's chief cities and the modes of dress of its people. Coverage The map is centered on the Persian Empire under the Safavid Dynasty (1501 - 1736), extending eastwards to the Indus River, beyond which the 'Empire of Great Chamus' held sway. To the west, the Fertile Crescent and Arabia are part of the Ottoman Turkish Empire. The Caspian Sea is shown in the fat, ovoid form first appearing in the geography of Claudius Ptolemy. This model was not replaced until the end of the 17th century, and the Caspian Sea was not correctly depicted on a map until the 1720s. The southernmost extent of the Grand Duchy of Muscovy can be seen in the Caucasus, northwest of the Caspian. The lands west of the Volga are dominated by Tartaria: the empire of the Great Khan. Cartographic History The map is drawn on a long-lived geographical model, only slightly changed since the mid-16th century. Speed's map was derived from that of Hondius, whose map was based on that of Ortelius - and his found its detail primarily from Giacomo Gastaldi's 1559 Il Disegno Della Prima Party Del Asia. Gastaldi's seminal map captured Persia during the first century of the Safavid Dynasty (1501 - 1736). The map's treatment of the coastline is fairly accurate, but its copious interior place names become less precise the further east and north one gets. For example, in Afghanistan, 'Cabul' appears to the south of 'Candahar.' The geography for this region, and that spanning to the east, would remain some of the most poorly understood among inhabited lands well into the 20th century. Presenting the Idea of Persia This map displays the classic elements associated with the carte á figures as a form: key city views along the top border, along with figures to the left and right depicting the denizens of the lands. The cities are Isfahan (Spaha), Hormuz (Ormus), Tabriz in Azerbaijan (Tarvis), and what is probably the Caspian port of Bandar Anzali (Gilan, actually the name of the province) - all of these were key trade centers in the western Persian Empire. Gilan Province was the principal Asian silk exporter to the west, for example. The left and right borders display Persian and Turkish men in customary garb, paired with their respective wives. The map's verso includes Speed's historical text on the Kingdom of Persia, written in entertaining and idiosyncratic English. The Engraver Speed's adoption of the Dutch carte á figures map style (and indeed, the entirety of the Dutch state-of-the-art for Asian mapping) becomes unsurprising when one considers Speed's dependency on Dutch engravers. Virtually all of the maps produced for Speed during his lifetime were executed by Jodocus Hondius and (as is the case here) his protégé Abraham Goos. It would appear that until well into the 17th century, the art of engraving in the British Isles was unequal to the challenge posed by the production of maps of this quality. Not until this 1676 Bassett and Chiswell edition of Speed's work would maps be included that were actually executed by an Englishman, Francis Lamb. Publication History and Census Although Speed died in 1629, his atlas was kept active long afterward as its plates passed from George Humble to William Garrett to Roger Rea and. …
