American variety - not so different from British music hall - started as an entertainment form in Tony Pastor s New Fourteenth Street Theater in New York. In England it began in beer halls before it graduated to its own specially built 'Palaces of Variety'. It's a sparkling history of a hundred years of music hall, woven around the story of Peter's own family - four generations of which, including himself, have 'worked the halls'.
