The fi rst part of the book (History) provides an overview of historical milestones,…with a particular emphasis on the two totalitarian regimes (the Wartime Slovak State and Communist Czechoslovakia 1948-1989). The second part, entitled Dilemmas, examines the current situation of Jewish cemeteries, the consequences of the Holocaust, and the ongoing transformations of Jewish holidays. The author's research leads to the conclusion that traditional manifestations of Jewish culture are being reshaped by factors of selectiveness, streamlining, and individualisation.

Od jeho smrti uplynuli takmer dve storocia, dodnes je vdaka nemu Pressburg znamy v celom zidovskom svete. Paradoxne v jeho posobisku sa o nom vie len malo.… Kniha mapuje zivot a dielo tohto vyznamneho rabina, ale aj osudy miesta jeho posledneho odpocinku. Najstarsi zachovany zidovsky cintorin v Bratislave bol pocas holokaustu a v obdobi komunizmu zniceny. Zachovalo sa len 23 hrobov tzv. rabinskeho okrsku. Tie neskor zakryli betonovym stropom a nad hrobmi vybudovali zastavku elektricky. Po novembri 1989 Medzinarodny vybor pre zachranu hrobov mudrcov z Pressburgu vyvinul iniciativu na zachranu tohto vyznamneho religiozneho miesta. Odstranovanie kolajnic a budovanie noveho memorialu sa zmenili na napinavu detektivku vdaka zdanlivo nevinnej podmienke: pri vsetkych pracach je nevyhnutne dodrziavat halachu.

Vzhladom na skutocnost, ze zidovsku komunitu v uplynulych sto rokov negativne zasiahli tri velke emigracne vlny (deportacie v obdobi holokaustu, ,alija nadeje" do Palestiny/Izraela kratko po oslobodeni a reakcia na okupaciu Ceskoslovenska vojskami Varsavskej zmluvy v roku 1968) autor prinasa aj poznatky a nazory ludi, ktori zvolili toto riesenie, neprerusili vsak spojenie so Slovenskom.

Jej prislusnici sa usiluju poz…nat a pochopit, co ich ocakava v dohladnych rokoch ci desatrociach a prisposobit sa tomu. Zaroven na nich neustale dolieha minulost: vplyv slavnej aj tazkej historie, antisemitizmus, dosledky holokaustu, viacnasobne nasilne prerusenie, ale aj tlak ortodoxneho judaizmu, ktory pre mnohych dodnes tvori etalon zidovstva. Hoci v praxi vacsinou uz nie je funkcny, urcuje priebeh sviatkov ci bohosluzieb, kulturu a sposob zivota veriacich a do urcitej miery ovplyvnuje aj ludi, ktori sa viery z roznych dovodov vzdali. Na margo toho prazsky rabin Efraim Karol Sidon uviedol, ze Zid "moze sa chovat ako chce, ale vzdy bude vediet, k comu sa nehlasi. Co opustil. Kulturu, ktoru - marna vec - vytvaral Pan Boh. A Zid sa musi rozhodnut: bud sa vrati, alebo zostane mimo seba".

The Introduction contains characteristics of the applied research techniques. The first chapter deals with the community in the process of the ghetto opening at the end of the 18th century; it focuses on the Holocaust survivor's identity and their attitude to Judaism. The second chapter analyzes the children of the Holocaust . The impact of diverse factors (religiosity, Israel, Slovakia, Holocaust, Communist society) on identity of the children of the Holocaust is studied here. The concluding chapter resumes that the processes, which have been taking place in Slovakia at the present time, represent the identity transformation, but not the disappearance of the Jewish community.
