Buchhändlerlehre in Konstanz, Wanderjahre in Deutschland. Sein 1835 eröffneter Buchladen in St. Gallen wurde zu einem der bekanntesten der Schweiz und Süddeutschlands. Die 1839-50 bestehende Verlagsgemeinschaft, die S. mit Christoph Zollikofer eingegangen war, dominierte das St. Galler Druckerei- und Verlagswesen. S. brachte dort das 1839 von ihm gegr. "Tagblatt der Stadt St. Gallen und der Cantone St. Gallen und Appenzell" ein, das ab 1841 im Verlag Zollikofer erschien. 1850 verkaufte er das Geschäft an Iwan von Tschudi und wurde Verleger in Stuttgart.
