In Tonga, a center of Polynesian navigation, two types were known: the tongiaki and the kalia. Suren versucht zu zeigen, dass die Substantiierung dieser Sicht in den betreffenden Beiträgen völlig unzureichend ist und macht am Beispiel Samoas anhand von Zitaten wahrscheinlich, dass die deutschen Kolonien im Pazifik nicht vom Rassismus geprägt waren - anders als etwa Britisch-Indien oder Britisch-Fiji. Auch der bedeutende Ethnologe Paul Hambruch wird gegen derartige Vorwürfe verteidigt.
