Ajouter au panierA letter from James McIntyre (1874deceased) to his sister Kit, sent from aboard the transport ship Grant on the way to the Philippines in March of 1899. McIntyre, who enlisted in Pittsburgh in July 1898, had just passed Sri Lanka and was traveling through the Malacca Strait on his way to Singapore, their last stop before Manila. McIntyre describes his impressions of the region and the locals, and the attitudes of his fellow soldiers. The previous week, the Grant had stopped at Colombo in Sri Lanka (then British Ceylon): "it is a nice place where the Elephant is used in place of horses and they had all kinds of tropical fruits that we could buy for a song and you ought to have heard some of the Hindoes sing the song of Tarra Ra boom Dea and Daisy Bell and several other popular songs we could understand each other quite well when they tried to speak English but when they spoke their native tongue it was the same as Dutch to us". Note that, by "Hindoes," McIntyre probably just means Sri Lankans generally, not Tamils in particular. In Sri Lanka, as in other places along their route, the locals would impress the American soldiers by diving for coins: "since we left Gibraltar the poorer of natives would swim to our ship and holler trow shiney me dive in ketch im then some one would throw a nickel or a dime and they would go under the water and they seldom came up without the coin that was thrown". McIntyre, seemingly in a bid to reassure his sister, explains to her that the soldiers see the war as a game or joke: "we are doing our best to get to the Philipines so we can take hand in the game they are playing over there what do you think of the war in the Philipines we take it as a joke and I dont think that there is a soldier on this boat who is sorry he came although every body is not looking for a chance to go home again some one will be sure to get back and my chance is as good as any we laugh and joke with [each] other about getting shot so dont think I am not taking the best of it and I will continue to enjoy my self till a Philipine stops me if one should be so fortunate". He also jokes about the food on board: "there are a great many other dishes that are new to me that I never heard of before I came in the Army here is another dish we only got on Geo. Washingtons Birthday it is called 'Cosomme', which is a french word for Slum you take one doz. of broken skylights and four bbls. of Whitewash one Tea spoonfull of baking powder and stir one half doz. assorted railroad tunnels in serve this on crutches if I dont stop here you will be leaving home to join the Army". Meanwhile, the ship had missed a lighthouse and "been lost all day in the straits of Malacco" (Malacca), which was "taken [as a joke] by us till we near run aground". In the strait are "a great many Chinese boats", and the men are entertained by "the capers the Chinese cut". When they finally reach Singapore, McIntyre is impressed by how advanced it is: "I have been writing since before dark and during that time we have run into Singapore one of the boys just asked me to come up on deck and see the town when he told me of the Electric lights and Trowley [trolley] Cars I told him he was trying to guy me but he said it was true and I was surprised to find it true but this is the nearest like a U.S. City at night I saw yet". Of interest to historians of the Philippine-American war, especially American soldiers' attitudes towards the conflict. Folded with small tears at folds; near fine. Eight-page single letter of two double-sided pages measuring 7 ¾ x 10 inches and two double sided pages measuring 4 ½ x 7 inches. …

Ajouter au panierAn excellent association copy of the scarce Manila printing of Military Governor E.S. Otis's report on the first year of the Philippine-American War, with a rare blueprint map of the capture of Manila. This copy was owned by Major General Thomas M. Anderson, commander of the assault on Manila which ended the Spanish-American War, as well as an officer in the Battle of Manila which kicked off the following year's conflict. Otis's report was submitted in August of 1899, and thus covers the year immediately following the capture of Manila from the Spanish, including the failed annexation, rapid breakdown of U.S.-Philippines relations, and reopening of hostilities. Despite the former allying with the Filipino revolutionary faction under Emilio Aguinaldo, who declared independence and drafted a constitution in late 1898, neither the Americans nor the Spanish recognized the independent islands in their negotiations for the end of the Spanish-American War, instead annexing the Philippines to the United States. The first few months of Otis's report largely focus on questions of muddled ownership, taxation, customs enforcement, and the legal rights of the American occupation. By November he already writes about efforts to suppress "seditious" Filipino newspapers, though the key turning point was the attempted landing of occupation forces at Iloilo in late December. The orders issued to Brig. Gen. Marcus Miller are printed here, stating that he is to be "conciliatory but firm" in his duty, noting that "a new provisional cabinet has been formed [in Manila], hostile to the American annexation. These men are closely watching the results of your expedition and greatly hope that you will be obliged to use force to gain Iloilo." In the tense weeks that followed, Aguinaldo and the Filipino government issued proclamations vowing to resist American pretensions of sovereignty with armed force if pushed, and the first casualties of the Philippine-American War were recorded when an American soldier opened fire on February 4, 1899. The reports in the present document paint a fascinating and detailed picture of the confused American response to the rapidly deteriorating relations with their former allies, and of similarly deteriorating attitudes: in the tone of their reports, officers plainly cease to view their adversaries as meek natives to be "civilized," describing them instead as untrustworthy and bloodthirsty savages after they refused to politely roll over. General Anderson, who, in command of a sizable force at the beginning of the war, is mentioned a number of times in these documents. His name is often underlined or otherwise highlighted, such as a particularly noteworthy mention on p.163, when his unit was permitted to launch the first formal attack against Filipino forces on February 5. Accompanying this copy of Otis's reports is an impressive blueprint map of the 1898 capture of Manila, possibly handcolored by Anderson or the drafter himself. The map, prepared by Sergeant J.H. Watkins of the Signal Corps in October 1898, depicts the lines of American entrenchments, insurgent forces (allied with the Americans in this instance), and of course the Spanish. Special attention is paid to the challenging terrain, with symbols representing "Swamp (Rice and Overflow)," "Jungle (Bamboo and other Tropical Undergrowth)," roads, churches, and telegraph lines. Anderson is the first named commanding officer on the map, and the map's compilers were members of his unit. Thomas McArthur Anderson (18361917) was a lawyer at the outbreak of the Civil War, when he enlisted in the 6th Ohio Volunteer Infantry with the encouragement of his uncle, Robert Anderson, the commanding officer of Fort Sumter. He was promoted to lieutenant colonel by 1864 and remained in the service. He was notably posted to Dyea, Alaska, at the beginning of the Klondike Gold Rush in 1898, before being promoted and given command of the first "Philippine Expeditionary Force" when war broke out with Spain. He landed on Luzon in June, played an instrumental role in the capture of Manila, and was still present for the first battle between Aguinaldo's government and American forces in 1899. He retired in January 1900, returning to his birth state to take charge of the Ohio Soldiers Home. A pair of rare and revealing documents, with important provenance. This first edition of Otis's reports, printed in Manila, is recorded at fewer than ten institutions on OCLC. It was printed with a wrapper title but no titlepage and was supplemented by a separately printed volume of appendices, not present here. Another edition, differently paginated and with an altered titlepage, was printed shortly afterwards in the Government Printing Office. A significantly smaller, non-blueprint version of Watkins's map is recorded at Yale and in the War Department Map Collection at the National Archives, but we locate no other copy of this larger (original?) blueprint version. OCLC 13196031, 68180445, 81872167, 237793063, 13196031, 68886550. Three-quarter blue diced russia and patterned black silk boards, spine gilt. Spine heavily sunned, corners rubbed. Manuscript note describing provenance on front free endpaper, occasional underlining and annotations in black or purple ink, else internally fine. Map trimmed unevenly but with ample margins on all sides, small closed tears and chips to edges, a few just into printed border.…

Ajouter au panierA 3 pp. autograph letter, signed "Dupont," and written on three pages of letterhead stationery, from the Menger Hotel in San Antonio, Texas, rectos only, approx. 220 words. The stationery features a vignette of the hotel in the upper left corner of the sheet. H.D. Kampmann is listed as Proprietor and McLean & Mudge, Managers. Versos of each sheet print a collage of images of the hotel. Accompanied by a stamped, addressed envelope with the vignette of the hotel occupying the left side, and captioned "San Antonio is an Ideal Health Resort." Old fold lines, else very good, and in a nice, legible hand. Dupont writes to Lizzie [Miss L. S [?] Fletcher] of Detroit that he had arrived in San Antonio with his father, put on his uniform and reported for duty: "they treated me very cordial indeed and it made me realize more fully what it is to be a regular." He mentions that Gen. McKibben [sic- McKibbin] was commanding the Dept. of Texas and was Colonel of the 12th, wearing that insignia on his collar. "[I]t made me feel blue to see that 12th on his collar for the last one I saw was on 'Drewdy.' " Dupont says his friend Drewdy, also a soldier, had promised him that his next birthday they would celebrate in the 12th. [Apparently Dupont's friend did not return from the war]. Dupont says he was due to leave for "Frisco" in the morning and asks that she keep writing to his address in Sherman [Texas?] until he has another address to give her. The Philippine American War began in February 1899 and lasted until July 1902, when the United States declared it over. Gen. Chambers McKibbin, born in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, served in the Civil War along with his three brothers. He later served in the Spanish American War, commissioned a Brigadier General of the U.S. Volunteers. In 1899 he was commissioned Colonel of first the 12th, then the 24th Infantry Regiment, and became commanding officer at Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio, 1899-1901. The 12th Infantry was posted to the Philippines in 1899 and continued to serve as garrison troops there until 1912.…

Ajouter au panierAverage. Wear, toning, and stabilized splits on some fold lines. Minor loss at a few fold intersections. Spot-stabilized with archival tissue. Size 24 x 28.25 Inches. This is a scare map of Central Luzon, the Philippines, issued at the height of the Philippine-American War (1899 - 1902) by the Military Governor in the Philippines, Major General Elwell Stephen Otis, and the 8th Army Engineering Corps. It ranks among the most detailed cartographic productions from the Philippine-American War. A Closer Look Although titled 'Southern Luzon,' this map, in fact, covers Central Luzon, specifically the lands including and just south of Manila, surrounding the Laguna de Bay, as far as the Quezon Isthmus and Isla Verde. During the early stages of the Philippine-American War, this area was primarily controlled by Philippine forces and was the most active theater, as the large number of noted engagements testifies. The map offers detailed topography via shading and identifies roadways, towns, cities, political boundaries, telegraph lines, and more. The Philippine-American War By the early 19th century, the Spanish colonial system that functioned for three centuries in the Philippines began to break down, and the Spanish employed increasingly harsh methods to suppress independence. These developments intersected with the 1898 Spanish-American War, when Americans backed the Emilio Aguinaldo (1869 - 1964) independence faction. After the Spanish-American War, the Philippines were ceded to the U.S., and American troops occupied Manila. As the U.S. debated what exactly they wanted to do with the Philippines, tensions grew between American forces and the indigenous revolutionaries, who were unhappy to have been passed from one colonizer to another. Conflict broke out in February 1899, with Emilio Aguinaldo leading the revolutionaries against his former backers. Aguinaldo's strongest base of support was on Luzon. In the first phase of the conflict (1899), he attempted pitched battles against American troops, which ended badly for the independence fighters. Afterward, Aguinaldo reluctantly switched to guerilla war tactics, which found some success, especially in parts of the archipelago far from Manila, but resulted in harsh reprisals by American troops on the civilian population. The Philippine-American War lasted for over three years until most of the rebels were captured or suppressed, though some continued to fight for another decade. Meanwhile, as a gesture towards independence, the Philippine Organic Act established the Second Philippine Commission and Philippine legislature in July 1902, the first step in a long process towards limited autonomy and finally complete independence in 1946. Estimates of Filipino civilian casualties vary wildly, from at least 200,000 to over one million, the majority of which were caused by famine and disease. The war was notable for multiple instances of well-documented atrocities, including scorched earth tactics and civilian internment in concentration camps. One American general became notorious for his order to 'kill everyone over the age of ten.' These actions led to considerable debate and discomfort in the United States. General Otis, the military governor named here who was in that office until May 1900, was savaged in the American press by anti-imperialists who had received letters from troops documenting atrocities. Otis tried to suppress these stories without success and was forced to grudgingly admit that some atrocities had likely taken place. He was also blamed in retrospect for rejecting a peace offer from Aguinaldo in the aftermath of the Battle of Manila in 1899, which might have averted the more intense and violent second phase of the war. Otis ended his stint in the Philippines, unpopular with both his troops and the American public. Publication History and Census This map was prepared by William L. Sibert under the direction of Major General E. S. Otis. It was printed by A. B. Graham Photo L.…

This map is one of the largest and most detailed cartographic productions from the Philippine-American War. This is a rare map of central Luzon, the Philippines, issued at the height of the Philippine-American War (1899 - 1902) by William L. Sibert of the 8th Army Engineering Corps and the Military Governor in the Philippines, Major General Elwell Stephen Otis. During the early stages of the Philippine-American War, this was the most active theater and largely controlled by Philippine forces. Three different 'lines of operations' are illustrated, marking the advance of troops under Major General Henry Ware Lawton, Major General Arthur MacArthur Jr., and Brigadier General Loyd Wheaton, respectively. Roads and telegraph lines are illustrated, and topography is expressed through hachure. The Philippine-American War The Philippine-American War lasted from February 4, 1899, until July 2, 1902, when the Philippine Organic Act established the Second Philippine Commission and Philippine legislature. The war immediately followed the Spanish-American War, set off once the Filipinos realized that the Americans were in the islands to stay. This is a rare 1900 map of Panay, the Visayas, the Philippines, issued at the height of the Philippine-American War (1899 1902) by the Office of the Chief Engineer in the Philippines. The campaign in the Visayas began four days after the beginning of the campaign around Manila on Luzon. Fighting began at Iloilo (Ilo-Ilo) on Panay, followed closely by the occupation of Cebu City on Cebu and Bacolod on Negros. Highly detailed, the map depicts the entire island of Panay, including the myriad rivers, towns, and villages. The map also labels Negros, although the only town marked is Bacolod. Telegraph lines crisscross the island and also connect Iloilo to Manila, Cebu, and Bacolod.
