Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Book Club Edition. Here is a nice edition of "Nicholas Nickleby" by Charles Dickens, published circa 1965 by Odhams Press, Ltd. in Long Acre, London. Odhams Press was dissolved in 1968. Odhams chose to keep the original illustrations created by Phiz (Hablot Knight Browne), which was, of course, a goo…d decision "The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby", first issued in serial parts, was Dickens' third novel, and the one that firmly established him in the pantheon of English novelists. It is part comedic, partly a romance, and partly serious exposition (especially the latter parts of the story. Wackford Squeers, the cruel schoolmaster, is one of Dickens' great villains, based on a person that Dickens had once met. It is a complex story, in ways that only the serially issued novel might be. And it is pure Dickens. TITLE : The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby AUTHOR : Charles Dickens (1812 - 1870) ILLUSTRATOR : Phiz ( Hablot Knight Browne ) IMPRINT : Odhams Press, Ltd. CONDITION - VERY GOOD - A previously owned book which remains clean and attractive, with the following noted: EXTERIOR : Spine extremities are modestly compressed, else the cover displays but mild signs of handling. Text-block edges are toned and just slightly weathered (most noticeably next to the spine head), else clean / BINDING : Solid / INTERIOR : A few leaves have corner creases, else the interior is clean and presentable throughout. Binding is firm. Sold as is as - book needs to be rebacked but now presented in a trimmed clear Dura-Lar (polyester film) sheet forming a dj which modestly enhances shelf appearance. Presumably all forty "Phiz" plates (including frontispiece and pictorial title) are all that should be present but Chapman and Hall did not see fit to include an illustration list/collation. Acquired from the estate of Birmingham, Alabama pathologist, bibliophile, and genealogist Dr. Albert Eugene Casey (1903-1982) who served as director of laboratories at Birmingham Baptist Hospitals from 1942-1972.
