It had secretly circulated in manuscript since about 1720 and was first printed in 1768 (though already in 1743 preceded by an English translation). Written in an anticlerical spirit and, though in the eyes of the modern reader not anti-Christian, banned on the same grounds as the works of Holbach. 'The author states his perplexity in reconciling the conception of God's goodness with the teaching that salvation is reserved for the privileged few. This matter has continually been the subject of his meditation. But having found no satisfactory solution in the orthodox doctrine . he has originated a new plan of salvation . If God does not save all men without exception, either it is because He does not wish to, or He is unable to do so, or man is unworthy of salvation. Examining each of these propositions in order, he rejects the first as counter to orthodox doctrine, the second as not only unorthodox, but blasphemous . He likewise dismisses the third proposition, for although man after the fall of Adam was unworthy of salvation, after the atonement, he again became worthy. Hence, all men are saved.' FIRST EDITION.Heaven Open to All Men., once attributed to Voltaire, was written by Pierre Cuppé (1664?-1748?)priest, canon regular of Saint Augustin, prior-priest of the parish of Bois, diocese of Saintesbefore 1716. It was widely distributed in France in clandestine manuscript form before being printed for the first time in an English translation in 1743 and then in France in 1768."Dangerous and full of impious maxims," it was banned along with materialist or atheist texts. However, the opinions it contains, while certainly unorthodox, lack the extremism of the emerging atheism of the time. Cuppé's work is a monstrous reaction against the exaggerations of the time concerning the small number of the elect and against the summary damnation of all infidels, that is to say against the Jansenist spirit. Our author opens the gates of heaven to all upon their death. For fear, either of condemnation by the Church, or of the harsh rigors of the Jansenist parliaments, Cuppé's book had to circulate for a long time only by means of handwritten copies" (Dictionary of Catholic Theology, VII, 1737)" (Jammes 701).At the end of the work, in another hand and at a later date, three pages on two leaves copy "extraits from the secret memoirs [sic] to serve the history of the republic of letters in France by M. de Bachaumont. Volume 2. P. 109. of 30 July 1764." The work in question is the Testament of J. Meslier. Soon after his death in 1729 various "extraits" circulated in which condensed versions of Meslier's atheistic thoughts spread through Europe. It seems either some of those "extraits" are copied here or that this manuscript was mistakenly thought to be Jean Meslier's confessions rather than the Cuppe manuscript. In either case, it adds a wonderful few pages that lend character to this clandestine manuscript and insights into the mysteries that often swirled around their circulation in the 18th century. CONDITION: Very good or better in full calf with gilt lettering to spine. Minor edgewear as usual with some loss along outer edge and head/heel of backstrip. Internally bright and clean.…
