Clément Janin, dans Les nouvelles littéraires, artistiques et scientifiques, du 19 mai 1928 (n° 292), loue la beauté de la couverture illustrée « sigillée d'un grand trèfle noir et or d'un puissant effet » (p. 4). Ce recueil de 3 contes, curieusement peuplé de personnages dont le nom commence par la syllabe « Her », parut pour la première fois au Mercure de France en 1895. « Par le biais de l'imaginaire symboliste, Régnier aborde la question de l'aristocratie qui lui deviendra un véritable mythe personnel et qui le travaillera tout au long de son oeuvre narrative.
