Hardback. Etat : Good. On 16 November 1940, the Nazis sealed off a large section of central Warsaw, where they compelled all the Jews of the Polish capital to live. Over 400,000 people were cut off from the outside world in the ghetto, among them a 47-year-old school teacher who kept a record of the terrible events and conditions. Part of Abraham Lewin's diary, covering the period from April 1942 to January 1943, was found hidden in a milk churn after the war and is now published in English for the first time. This document, fit to rank with the accounts of Anne Frank and of Emanuel Ringelblum, is especially illuminating on how far the Jews were aware of their possible fate and on how they reacted to the threat of deportation to the death camps. Antony Polonsky's introduction and notes place the events in the history of the Warsaw Ghetto and the fate of Polish Jewry as a whole, and demonstrate how Lewin's diary is an important contribution to the knowledge of the Holocaust.…

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Sadanlaur Publications, Published 1993. Paperback, 350 pp.; 22 cm; First Edition. In very good condition. Glossy black laminated wraps show mild shelf wear on both covers, with bumping and creasing to corners, light rubbing along bottom edges, and a few fine surface scratches to the laminate. Binding tight. Otherwise unmarked. Polonsky wrote for CBS while blacklisted, submitting scripts through Jeremy Daniel, a friend who agreed to front them and who is credited on the title page of all but three. Producer Charles W. Russell had first hired the blacklisted trio of Walter Bernstein, Arnold Manoff and Polonsky onto Danger, then carried them to You Are There, where remote historical subjects gave cover for the writers' own predicament: Galileo before the Inquisition, Savonarola, Milton under censorship, each anchored by Walter Cronkite reporting as though from the scene. Schultheiss contributes a substantial introduction, A Season of Fear, and appendices reconstructing the front attributions for both series from Russell's annotated script lists and from interviews with Polonsky, now held in the Abraham Polonsky Collection at California State University, Northridge. Contents: Introduction; Cortes Conquers Mexico; The Crisis of Galileo; The Fate of Nathan Hale; The Secret of Sigmund Freud; The Recognition of Michelangelo; The Vindication of Savonarola; Mallory's Tragedy on Mt. Everest; The Emergence of Jazz; The Torment of Beethoven; The Tragedy of John Milton.…
