Il avait d'abord été peintre, puis décorateur d'intérieur, avant d'aborder l'art de verre qui le fascinait depuis toujours. Auteur de nombreux vitraux et de mosaïques, il mit également au point le type de verre irisé auquel son nom reste attaché le 'Tiffany Favrile Glass' - et en tira de merveilleux objets, dont ses célèbres vases et lampes de verre soufflé ou plombé.
