Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Etat : FINE. Etat de la jaquette : FINE. First Edition. First Printing. 332pp. Color illustrated throughout. 4to, sewn binding in blue paper-over-board hard covers. FINE copy in FINE jacket. 'Challenging the dominant characterization of Edward Burne-Jones as an escapist who withdrew from the modern wo…rld into imaginary realms of his own creation, this groundbreaking book argues that he was engaged in a fundamentally radical defiance of the age, protesting against imperial aggression, capitalist economic inequality, and environmental destruction in the wake of the industrial revolution. Harnessing the utopian power of embodied aesthetic encounters, Burne-Jones drew inspiration from the medieval concept of dreams as visionary states of transformation. Therefore, his art functioned not as a retreat, but as a vehicle for revolutionary awakening. Often characterized as a painter, this book re-centers Burne-Jones's practice in the decorative arts, demonstrating that he consistently interrogated the boundaries of artistic media, in keeping with wider debates over the role of the arts in the nineteenth century. The first scholarly monograph solely devoted to Burne-Jones since 1973, The Radical Vision of Edward Burne-Jones offers a thorough re-examination of his work, illuminating his radical defiance of the artistic, social, and political hierarchies of nineteenth-century Britain.

See both men's entries in the Oxford DNB. 4pp, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with slight spot from previous mount at one corner. Folded twice. Signed 'H. H. Armstead'. In reply to a letter of Dafforne, he reports that 'the Statues I have made for the "Colonial Office" Niches are not yet in situ - but are now b…eing raised to the niches, and they will be in their places within the next few days.' He gives the names and positions of the statues, adding: 'The eight men are there as Secretaries of State for the Colonies'. He also indicates the work he has done for 'the central group representing the Queen &c &c': 'the two outside figures only they represent "Navigation" and "legislation", as well as 'the four flattish Reliefs under the central group [.] they are the Virtues "Truth," "Fortitude," "Temperance," and "Obedience." He continues: 'You are, of course, aware that the alto Relievos of the 5 divisions of the World & "Government" and "Education" are by me'. He concludes, with a hint of bitterness: 'I am glad you like the memorial work, it appears to give general pleasure - some satisfaction to the poor artists who were nearly made bankrupt by it.'.

Both items in good condition, on lightly-aged paper. Both of them bifoliums with mourning borders; and both in their original envelopes, addressed by Marston, with stamp and postmarks. ONE: 4pp., 12mo. He begins by stating that he is gratified to find that his poems please Baron. 'The only novel I wrote, (it is more than 20 year…s ago) has I believe been long out of print. A comparatively short tale entitled "Family Credit" together with other sketches and essays (chiefly contributed to "Household Worlds' [sic] was published many years gone by Messr. Ward and Lock as the 1st. Volume of a Sjhilling series, and is possibly still to be had on application to them.' He would gladly send Baron a photograph, but his supply is exhausted. 'Very good ones I believe are to be had of the Stereoscope Company Regent Street taken 10 years since and also late of Messrs Elliott & Fry. Baker St.' He apologises for the 'hurried scrawl': 'I am in the midst of preparations for leaving London'. TWO: 4pp., 12mo. He regrest that he cannot 'comply with Mrs. Baron's wishes': 'Years ago some valued letters of Mr. Charles Dickens & other correspondents were destroyed by the lamentable mistake of a servant, and of those which remain I have given away all except those which refer to matters important to myself. - | All the letters I retain of my late friend, D. G. Rossetti, are of the same character, with the exception of one or two written during his last illness which on that account I desire to preserve.' Baron was a shameless autograph hunter, and perhaps this prompts Marston to comment: 'Whenever it is known that autographs of distinguished men are to be had the possessor is immediately applied to, so that at this date you will not be surprised to find that I have not one autograph in my possession which I can part with either of Dickens or Rossetti.' Regarding his own 'literary activity', he regrets to say that he has 'no volume of poems in preparation'; his health is 'too much impaired for any mental labour except of the most necessary kind'. He is 'now preparing to quit town for change of air in the hope of benefit'.

4 facsimile pages of the original preliminary matter at the rear of the Rossetti Preface volume, this accompanied by 4 volumes in facsimile of the original periodical, these with tissue-guarded frontispiece etchings by (respectively) W. Holman Hunt, James Collinson, Ford Madox Brown and W.H. Deverell, final pages with offset bro…wning from wrappers, pp. 30, [4], 192 (across four volumes), 8vo, original blue (the Preface) or buff wrappers, some browning and little creased and nicked to overhanging edges, the first volume with small wax-stain to fore-margin of front, the original portfolio of quarter cream and blue boards, browned and spotted with some wear, repaired along hinge, good. The Germ, the manifesto-cum-magazine of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, was not a financial success and ceased publication after four issues. But it was not without influence, and its status as a collectors' item brought about this facsimile, which adds a Prefatory volume by William Michael Rossetti.
