Most likely from the collection of George Peabody, as this was purchased in a lot of others, some of which bear his signature. Containing the Peabody Institute bookplate on the inside front cover, which also states, Presented by George Peabody. George Peabody (1795-1869) is considered one of the first modern philanthropists, establishing trusts to help the poor, as well as founding the Peabody Institute. He gained much of his fortune from banking, eventually partnering with Junius Spencer Morgan, father of J.P. Morgan. Edited and published by Ralph Griffiths, the Monthly Review published works of criticism on many authors and books, providing bibliographic and historical information on many topics.
