This manuscript is an important source for the Scots poetry of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. Bannatyne was the collector of this work, to which he added some of his own writing. Ramsay compiled several extracts from this work for 'The Ever Green' as an attempt to reaffirm interest in older national literature.
