The following comments, however, are concerned only with the first part, since a better understanding of the original sources can advance our knowledge of Solon. Our aim must be to find out what an intelligent and informed Greek during the classical period knew and thought of Solon. The contemporary tradition of the sixth century is lost, except for fragments of the poems, and the later tradition represented mainly by Diogenes Laertius and Plutarch evidently goes back to sources of the fourth century. Schriftltr. der Zeitschriften Rheinisches Museum für Philologie (1959-1967) und Gnomon (1970-1999, ab 1975 Mitherausgeber). - Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - Aus dem Text: Demos und Demokratia waren zusammen mit Theseus auf dem berühmten Gemälde des Euphranor in der Königshalle der Agora von Athen dargestellt. Pausanias, der uns davon ganz kurz berichtet (1. 3. 3), fügt hinzu, diese Darstellung zeige, daß Theseus die politische Gleichheit in Athen begründete, und daß es eine Tradition gab, die behauptete, daß die Athener von Theseus bis auf Peisistratos demokratisch regiert wurden. Pausanias hält nicht viel von dieser Tradition, aber wir wissen von anderen zeitgenössischen Autoren, daß sie im vierten Jahrhundert gang und gäbe war. Besonders Isokrates gibt dieses Bild der altattischen Demokratie, wenn er im Panathenaicus von 340 v. Chr. sagt (5. 148), daß die Athener der von Theseus begründeten Demokratie tausend Jahre treu blieben, bis Peisitratos seine Tyrannie errichtete. Die von Euphranor dargestellte und von Isokrates gelobte Demokratie war demnach nicht die Verfassung des Kleisthenes, sondern die des Theseus, und es ist die bildliche Darstellung und die kultische Bedeutung dieser Demokratie, die uns heute beschäftigt. - Wikipedia: Antony E.
