Ajouter au panierHEART Herning Museum of Contemporary Art in Herning, Denmark is a new building designed by the renowned American architect Steven Holl. He showed a keen interest in the project, first of all because the museum owns a unique collection by the Italian conceptual arte povera-artist Piero Manzoni. In 1960 Manzoni was invited to Hern…ing for the first time by Aage Damgaard, the owner of a well-known shirt factory. Aage DamgaardÆs interest in contemporary art resulted in a visionary model for cooperation between businesses and artists û and in founding a museum. HollÆs complex structures are surrounded by a landscape of hills and ponds which fits in the environment. The single-story building, with its natural light and innovative roof construction, refers to the formal vocabulary of the factory opposite from the 1960s in the circular shape of a collar. From a birdÆs-eye perspective the new building recalls outstretched shirt sleeves and the in situ fa?ade has a surface resembling a wrinkled white shirt. Munch's mapping out of his own conflict-ridden life in his work from the 1890s anticipated and prefigured several of the central existential issues of the 20th century. In the course of this process, Munch set Man's spiritual conflicts free from a Christian context, creating a series of visual and conceptual models for the portrayal of modern Man's conflicted existence. Through judicious selection, this exhibition elucidates major individual works of art which have been inspired by Edvard Munch.The juxtaposition of these works illuminates significant aspects of the more recent works, which in turn shed new light upon Edvard Munch's art.".
