Discriminatie wegens godsdienst, levensovertuiging, politieke gezindheid, ras, geslacht of op welke grond dan ook, is niet toegestaan. Ien Dales (1931-1994) was vanaf 1987 twee jaar burgemeester van Nijmegen. Ze maakte in die korte tijd indruk door haar grote betrokkenheid bij de stad. Als minister van Binnenlandse Zaken, vanaf 1989, verdedigde zij onvermoeibaar het anti-discriminatiebeginsel in artikel 1 van de Grondwet. COC Nijmegen stelde in 1996, bij gelegenheid van haar 25-jarig jubileum, een jaarlijkse prijs in voor personen of organisaties die zich belangeloos inzetten voor gelijke rechten en het tegengaan van discriminatie, zoals verwoord in artikel 1 van de Grondwet. Het was vanzelfsprekend dat deze prijs naar Ien Dales vernoemd werd. In 1998 werd, bij gelegenheid van de uitreiking van de burgemeester Dales prijs, de eerste burgemeester Dales lezing gehouden. Een prominente spreker geeft daarin vanuit zijn of haar beroepspraktijk een visie op de werking van artikel 1. Zowel de prijs als de lezing, altijd uitgesproken in de Nijmeegse Raadzaal, zijn inmiddels instituten geworden. 777g.…
