Rev David Simpson, M.A. (12 October 1745 24 March 1799) was an Anglican priest who spent most of his career in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England. His theology was evangelical and this was to cause problems during his career. As an undergraduate he became a friend of Rowland Hill, and he was also a close friend of John Wesley, the founder of Methodism. He was a pioneer of congregational hymn-singing and published a collection of hymns in 1776. Simpson defends the truth and divine inspiration of the Christian Scriptures, argues for the necessity of revealed religion against rationalist critiques, and seeks to reaffirm Christian belief and practice among wavering readers.He offers a response to Thomas Paine"s 'The Age of Reason' and to other similar sceptical works challenging the authority of the Bible.Lacking front free endpaper.Published in the civil parish of Burslem, Stoke on Trent, in the early 19th century by Tregortha, a major figure in the book trade of the region, and provided printing and binding services. He printed about eighty-one books and pamphlets, many of a religious nature between 1796 and his death in 1821. In a full tree calf binding.
