Hugh Alexander Macpherson (1858-1901) was a clergyman, a noted zoologist and a Member of the British Ornithologists' Union. His 'The Vertebrate Fauna of Lakeland,' suggested by, and following the main lines of, Harvie-Brown and Buckley's series of faunas of the Scottish areas, is probably his best known work. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition although a previous owner has covered the board and spine in clear sticky-backed plastic. The contents are tight and clean with a name written on the front free endpaper.PLEASE NOTE: This is a fairly heavy book and extra postage may apply for delivery outside the UK.

Duncan Matheson (1824-1869), who has been described as Scotland's forgotten evangelist, was a little known, but powerful lay preacher of the 1859 Revival. He became a Scripture Reader with the British Army in the Crimean War, and also preached and handed out thousands of Bibles and tracts to the soldiers of the French and Sardinian armies. After the Crimean War he went to Sardinia where he distributed thousands more Bibles and New Testaments as well as other books and tracts in Italian. He then returned to Scotland to produce a monthly Gospel magazine entitled "Herald of Mercy" which had a circulation of 32,000. Moved by the Aberdeen Revival in 1859, he began to preach to multitudes of people around the coast of north eastern Scotland. The book is bound in the original ochre cloth covered boards with gold and black titling on the spine and black titling with a black and silver portrait of Macpherson on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and light soiling to the boards and bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with browning to the reverse of the frontispiece. There is foxing to the fore edge of the text block and on some pages this has seeped a little way into the fore margin. There is no inscription.
