Ajouter au panierPaperback. Etat : New. Print on Demand. This book presents the findings of an expedition to the Congo in 1903-05, led by the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, on the prevalence and transmission of sleeping sickness. The reports in this volume are the third in a series of progress updates from the expedition and focus on gland palpation as a novel diagnostic technique for identifying trypanosomes as the causative agents of sleeping sickness. The authors describe the technique and compare its efficacy with other diagnostic methods used at the time, demonstrating its superiority. The authors then present a groundbreaking study of lymphatic enlargement as an indicator of sleeping sickness infection, concluding that in heavily infected regions, almost all cases of unexplained lymphadenopathy can be attributed to sleeping sickness. This work is significant in providing a simple and effective tool for diagnosing sleeping sickness in regions where the disease is prevalent, a major advance in the fight against this devastating disease. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. They are commonly known as soft scales, wax scales or tortoise scales. The females are flat with elongated oval bodies and a smooth integument which may be covered with wax. In some genera they possess legs but in others, they do not, and the antennae may be shortened or missing. The males may be alate or apterous. Author Robert Newstead (1859 - 1947) was a British entomologist and archaeologist. He was from 1886 curator at the Grosvenor Museum in Chester, where he was responsible for archaeological excavations. From 1905 he was a lecturer in medical entomology (entomology and parasitology) at the School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine of the University of Liverpool and from 1911 a professor of entomology.
