Fine unread condition textured maroon boards, dark maroon spine, and gold spine lettering contained in a fine condition non price-clipped photographic and color illustrated dust jacket. Includes Author Dedication; Preliminary Page Quote by Goethe; Preface; Epilogue…; Acknowledgments and Index. Illustrated with two sections of black-and-white photographic plates. "Until Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney opened her studio on Eighth Street in Manhattan in 1914 - which almost two decades later evolved into the Whitney Museum - contemporary American artists had little or no outlet for their work. Throughout the nineteenth century, as America expanded its borders from coast to coast, tilling the land and building industry were far greater priorities for Americans than art. Yet, especially in the latter half of the century, vast fortunes were amassed by many who built themselves extraordinary mansions that cried out to be embellished with works of art. In those days, however, the only palce art was to be found and collected was Europe. American artists more often than not sought inspiration and recognition in Europe. Thus, at the dawn of the new century the relatively few museums and galleries in the United States focused primarily, if not exclusively, on foreign art. It was, therefore, all the more remarkable when Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, scion of America's wealthiest family and herself a sculptor, opened her own studio in Greenwich Village for exhibitions of contemporary American artists. After twenty-two years on Eighth Street, the Whitney moved uptown to Fifty-fourth Street next to the Museum of Modern Art. With the Whitney's ever expanding collection and growing attendance, space once again became an issue. When a desirable plot of land was located and purchased on Madison Avenue and Seventy-fifth street in 1964, the famed architect Marcel Breuer was commissioned to build the new Whitney Museum. The imposing granite structure of the Whitney Museum of American Art, as we know it today, opened its doors in 1966 and has become one of America's most prominent cultural institutions. When Gertrude died in 1942, her daughter Flora Miller took over as head of the Whitney. Like her mother, she dedicated her all - her time and fortune - to the museum. In 1977, the third generation Whitney woman, Flora Biddle, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney's granddaughter, became president. As time went on, the size and scope of the Whitney and its increasing financial demands led it to pass from a family-run museum to a trustee-run business. The Whitney Women and the Museum They Made is a tale in which high ideals, extraordinary altruism, and great dedication increasingly come face to face with large egos, big business, intrigue, and the harsh realities of today's world. Flora Biddle's sensitive and insightful memoir is, despite all these obstacles and problems, a success story of three generations of forceful, indomitable women." - from the inner front and rear jacket flaps. Kagan, Abby (jacket design); Henri, Robert (front jacket portrait of Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney); Nesser, Helaine (front jacket photographs); Carlsen, Leif (author photograph) (illustrateur).

Buch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - In this novel approach to law and literature, Robert Barsky delves into the canon of so-called Great Books, and discovers that many beloved characters therein encounter obstacles similar to those faced by contemporary refugees and undocumented persons. The struggles of Odysseus, Moses, Aeneas, Dante,…Satan, Dracula and Alice in Wonderland, among many others, provide surprising insights into current discussions about those who have left untenable situations in their home countries in search of legal protection. Law students, lawyers, social scientists, literary scholars and general readers who are interested in learning about international refugee law and immigration regulations in home and host countries will find herein a plethora of details about border crossings, including those undertaken to flee pandemics, civil unrest, racism, intolerance, war, forced marriage, or limited opportunities in their home countries.
