All'inizio sembra di leggere dei brevi racconti, apparentemente slegati l'uno dall'altro, non solo nel contenuto ma anche nello stile e nel tono, che passa dal comico al grottesco, dal tragico al realistico, con qualche spruzzata di pomo soft. Dopo un po' ci si accorge che i personaggi sono sempre gli stessi, e si scopre una vicenda che si dipana su questo sfondo corale fatto di cinquantenni-sessantenni di oggi, un mosaico di esistenze che si incrociano: intellettuali cinici orfani di ideali ma affamati di illusioni, il docente universitario che fa turismo sessuale a Cuba, una donna bella e intelligente che decide di spendersi in una relazione sbagliata, il gay intollerante della convivenza, il sessantenne sposato che cerca amanti per il tempo libero. Ambienti e paesaggi di una Torino sempre presente, descritta con affetto e ironia. Un piccolo nucleo di amici legati da un comune passato di passione politica ormai ridotta a frusto argomento di conversazione. Paura dell'invecchiamento e identità incompiute. Persone che forse non sono mai cresciute del tutto. C'è la follia, la malattia, l'amore di genitori che non capiscono niente dei figli. Un'arca di Noè dove l'unica speranza di sopravvivenza sembra essere amarsi ancora, ma è sempre più difficile. Libro.

He falls in love with a younger woman, and since divorce is illegal in Italy unless there is just cause (like catching your spouse committing adultery), he decides to find his wife another lover. That way he wont need to kill her. 8 x 10 inches. Very Good plus, with light creases and toning overall. Several pinholes to a few; one with a small chip and corresponding closed tears.

Seems simple enough. The first of Mastoianni's four "Italian Style" films, and winner of an Academy Award for Best Writing, a BAFTA, three Golden Globes, and nominated for a host of others. 7 x 9.25 inches. Very Good plus overall, with moderate curling, a few with slight discoloration. Criterion Collection 286.

Illustrated throughout with black-and-white still photos from the film, full-color front wrapper fold-out art, and the program details a synopsis and cast and crew credits. Notations throughout in manuscript ink, mostly amending certain words of the synopsis. Ferdinando (Mastroianni) is bored with life and his wife (Rocca). He falls in love with his cousin (Sandrelli), and since divorce is illegal in Italy unless there is just cause (like catching your spouse committing adultery), he decides to find his wife another lover instead of killing her. Seems simple enough. Collection of 19 vintage black-and-white photographs of actress Daniel Rocca, seen here at the 15th Cannes Film Festival in 1962, as well as some candid risque shots of Rocca in bed., and two negative contact sheets. Several photos credited to Catherine Redmond-Hesse, with her rubber stamp on the versos, and others with the Dalmas press agency rubber stamp on the versos. Included is a handwritten letter from a representative of the Dalmas agency, on their stationery, thanks Rocca for her recent order, dated 1962. Rocca (1937-1995) began modeling in the early 1950s, winning Miss Catania in 1953s, and eventually was discovered while she competed in the Miss Italy pageant. Her film debut came in Maurice Cloche's "Marchands de Filles" (1957), and notable credits include "Caltiki - The Immortal Monster" (1959), "Austerlitz" (1960), "Divorce, Italian Style" (1961, opposite Marcello Mastroianni), and "The Captive City" (1962). After some success in the 1960s, Rocca's career went south, and mental illness plagued her until death, having since retired to an assisted living home where she wrote books of poetry and fiction. Imagery from early Cannes Festivals is uncommon, making this substantial collection of Rocca photos all the more desirable. Four photos 5 x 7 inches, seven photos 7 x 9.5 inches, six photos 8 x 10.5 inches, contact sheets 8 x 10 inches, with some slightly larger or smaller overall. All slightly curling, else Near Fine.
