It survived 40 editions, being used as late as 1730. An Englis…h translation by Richard Jonas was published in 1540, printed by Thomas Raynalde. This translation, entitled 'The Byrth of Mankynde' was the first book on the subject to be printed in English. There were three variant editions in 1513, for which no clear priority has been established. All were printed from different type by different printers. One is dated and the other two are not, One was reproduced in facsimile in 1910 at Munich and at Zurich, J. Stocker, 1977.' Original full leather, all edges gilt. Near Fine.

Frontespizio stampato in rosso e nero con una grande silografia centrale raffigurante una scena di parto; il testo è illustrato da 20 figure incise in legno che illustrano le diverse posizioni del feto nell' utero, due gemelli, un neonato mostruoso con due teste, una sedia per ostetricia, ecc. Bell' esemplare di questo piccolo manuale per levatrici che è assolutamente introvabile in buono stato di conservazione. Prima ed unica edizione italiana del famoso Rosengarten basata sull' edizione in latino del 1536 pubblicata da Bernardino Bindoni. Quantunque questo celebrato libretto sia di grande rarità in ogni edizione, questa traduzione in volgare è irreperibile. Essa non è registrata nelle principali bibliografie specializzate e manca alle maggiori biblioteche mediche, comprese la National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, la Wellcome Historical Medical Libray e la Hellman Collection of early obstetrical books. Una copia esiste nella Library of Congress ed una seconda nella Bibliotetheca Walleriana. Quest' importante trattatello di ostetricia ebbe un' enorme influenza nelle pratiche delle levatrici e dei chirurghi del suo tempo. Il gran numero di ristampe dell' edizione tedesca chiamata Rosengarten, pubblicata per la prima volta nel 1513, e il prodigioso numero di traduzioni in parecchie lingue sotto diversi titoli testimoniano il successo e la popolarità di un testo comprensibile anche a coloro che non conoscevano il latino. Per quasi due secoli esso servì come manuale pratico di ostetricia in tutt' Europa. Eucharius Rosslin fu medico insigne nelle città di Worms e Francoforte. "The significance of the Rosengarten is not due to its being the first printed obstetrical work, but rather to the fact that its text and illustrations resumed a tradition, broken for almost fifteen hundred years. Rosslin established the necessity for thorough instruction of midwives. In his versified preface he censured the wretched condition of the current obstetrics, and the ignorance, carelessness, and superstition of the midwives, who brought about unnecessary deats of numberless newborn. The infant mortality bluntly labelled murder, for which the guilty ones deserved to be buried alive, or broken on the wheel, instaed of being allowed to receive an honorarium for services rendered. In his book, which he wrote at the order of the Duchess Katherine of Brunswick, he attempted to eliminate, or at least mitigate, these evils." (Hellman, Early obstetrical books, pp. 1-6). Faksimiledruck Nr. 25 von 475 Exemplaren.- Eucharius Rösslin (1470-1526) war ab 1493 als Apotheker in Freiburg im Breisgau tätig. Nach einer 1504 Verurteilung wegen seines gewalttätigen V…erhaltens bei einem Rechtsstreit mit einem Stadtschreiber verließ er 1506 die Stadt und ging nach Verhandlungen mit dem Frankfurter Rat zunächst als Stadtarzt nach Frankfurt am Main. Dort stand er in den Diensten der Herzogin Katharina von Sachsen und Braunschweig, der Frau von Herzog Erich I. von Braunschweig-Lüneburg. Ihr widmete er seinen 1508 bis 1512 kompilierten, 1513 beim Drucker Martin Flach (ca. 1440?ca. 1510) in Straßburg erschienenen Rosengarten. 1513 arbeitete er als Stadtarzt in Worms, wo er den Titel eines Doktors der Medizin führte, und von wo aus er 1517 erneut nach Frankfurt ging, um dort wieder als Stadtarzt tätig zu sein. Er starb dort Ende September 1526, worauf sein Sohn Eucharius Rösslin der Jüngere Nachfolger im Amt des Frankfurter Stadtarztes wurde.Der schwangeren Frauen und Hebammen Rosengarten, wie der vollständige Titel lautet, ist das erste bedeutende Handbuch zur Geburtshilfe und beruht auf alten Texten, insbesondere Werken von Soranos von Ephesos (in der zu Beginn des 6. Jahrhunderts als Gynaecia angefertigten Übersetzung und Bearbeitung von Gynaikeia durch Mustio), und auf dem Werk des italienischen Arztes Giovanni Michele Savonarola. Die 13 Kapitel enthalten 25 von Erhard Schön angefertigte Holzschnitte auf denen verschiedene Kindslagen und ein Gebärstuhl dargestellt werden. Auch aus dem vor 1500 entstandenen Frauenbüchlein[2][3] eines Pseudo-Ortolfs von Baierland (?Ortolff von Bayerland?: Disz biechlin sagt wie sich die frawen halten sülle vor de gepurt in der gepurt und nach der gepurt) und aus dem Kinderbüchlein des Bartholomäus Metlinger übernahm Rösslin Inhalte.
