Frontispiece, x, 210 pp; 53 figs. + additional figs. in Appendices (see below). Original cloth. Cabot embossed stamp on title page, ink stamp on verso of title page ('Received January 17 1984') and on top and bottom edge. Else Near Fine, in near fine dust jacket. In his introduction, Gowing mentions Cohen's Introduction to Newton's Principia as one of two 'exellent and detialed' commentaries, along with A. Rupert Hall & Laura Trilling's Introduction to Vol. V of Newton's Correspondence. Appendix I (143-185; 34 figs.) = English translation of Logometria (p. 142 illustrates the title page of the Trinity College Library copy, with the famous note, 'Isaac Newton, speaking of Mr. Cotes, said 'If he had lived we might have known something'). Pp. 187-191, 2 figs. = Commentary on Proposition IV of Logmetria. Pp. 191-194, 1 fig. = Cotes' eighteen forms of fluents. Pp. 195-203, 3 figs. = Logometria, Part III, Problem X: The cotes spirals and related orbits. Pp. 205-206, 1 fig. = A manuscript in Trinity College Library, Cambridge. The fig. reproduces MS 1 17 12 20, 'Instruments in Trinity college Library, Cambridge, 20 October 1704'. 'Roger Cotes (16821716) was the first Plumian Professor of Astronomy and Experimental Philosophy, at Trinity College, Cambridge. One of the most distinguished, and certainly one of the most ardent, of the early Newtonians he did important work in mathematics and astronomy and edited the second edition of Newton's Principia. Cotes died young and published only one paper, the Logometria, during his lifetime; a translation of this paper is given in the Appendix. Most of Cotes's papers were published posthumously in Latin in Harmonia Mensurarum in 1722. Dr Gowing discusses Cotes' work in some detail but has written the work in such a way that the more technical aspects of the mathematics can be omitted at first reading whilst still giving a clear idea of Cotes' achievement. Cotes' work was significant but his full potential was unrealised; in Newton's reputed words: 'If he had lived, we might have known something' ' (Cambridge University Press Web site). Contents: Preface; Introduction; 1. Cotes as first Plumian Professor, and as editor of Newton's Principia; 2. Logometria; 3. New methods in the calculus; 4. Cote's factorisation theorem; 5. Astronomy; 6. Numerical methods; 7. The missing works; 8. Conclusion; Appendices; Select bibliography; Index.

Hinges exposed, armorial bookplate of agricultural reformer Arthur Young (1741-1820) to FEP, head of title page shaved, scattered spotting. Ink-stamps of the Royal Agricultural Society of England to verso of title page and final page of index. The English mathematician Roger Cotes (1682-1716) was appointed Professor of Astronomy at Cambridge in 1706. A close friend of Newton, Cotes edited the second edition of the Principia in 1713. His untimely death was a great loss to English science, and Newton observed 'If he had lived we might have known something'. Cote's lectures, which were formal demonstration classes, were among the earliest of their kind in England. First published in 1738, this work is notable for containing the first English translations of Edmond Halley's 'Reason for Rising and Falling in the Barometer upon changes of Weather' and Newton's 'Scale of Degrees of Heat'. Cotes, an English mathematician who edited the second edition of Newton's PRINCIPIA, made advances in the theory of logarithms, the integral calculus and in numerical methods, particularly interpolation. His quadrature formulas known as Newton-Cotes formulas and first introduced what is known today as Euler's formula. He was the first Plumian Professor and Cambridge University from 1707 until his death at the age of thirty-three. This work was held in great estimation. Cotes genius earned encomiums from his contemporaries and successors; Sir Isaac Newton said, "If Mr. Cotes had lived, we should have known something." An unusual late 18th century manuscript on classical physics that cites Isaac Newton, Blaise Pascal, William Harvey, Henry Power, and others. The text, approximately 200 pages, presents an ordered and detailed account of a number of related topics: optics; hydrostatics and pneumatics; mechanics including simple machines such as the lever and screw, the behaviour of descending bodies, and pendulums; phosphorus and its chemical transformations; and fortifications and architecture. The notes are dense but generally neat and legible with carefully prepared diagrams, so this seems to be a fair copy rather than a working notebook. Newton is cited in the section on light and colour: 'What Sir I.N. has said by way of [?] in the last edit of his Opticks will appear to be an established truth from most if not all the following examples, some of which he mentions himself". And Harvey in a short section on chemical transformations: "Harvey had (says he) the opportunity as well as the curiosity upon several occasions to examine the weight of [?] when some of them taken up in places very distant from one another.'. The origin of much of the material is unclear, though the long section on hydrostaticks was taken from Hydrostatical and Pneumatical Lectures by Roger Cotes (1682-1716), originally published privately in 1738 and with a second edition at Cambridge in 1747. Cotes was 'probably the most talented British mathematician of the generation after Newton'. He was nominated as the first Plumian professor of astronomy at Cambridge in 1706 and 'his appointment was favoured by his influential mentor Richard Bentley, master of Trinity; by Newton's successor as Lucasian professor, William Whiston, who claimed to be in mathematics "a child to Mr Cotes" (Whiston, 133); and by Newton himself. In 1709 Cotes became heavily involved in the work for which he is best remembered, namely the revisions for the second edition of Newton's Philosophia naturalis principia mathematica, the first being out of print' (Oxford Dictionary of National Biography). Cotes died young, and Newton was reported to have said that, 'if he had lived we might have known something'. A number of Cotes's lectures and mathematical analyses were published posthumously by his executor Robert Smith, the Hydrostatical and Pneumatical Lectures being one of them. It is tempting to question whether other portions of the present manuscript are also based on Cotes's work, and further academic scrutiny might be fruitful.

Engraved armorial bookplate of James Parker Smith (1854-1929) of Jordanhill. Teart in leaf 169/170 with old repair - no losses, light browning of a few signatures, but a crisp, very good copy. Robert Smith (1689-1768), Cotes' cousin, assistant and successor at Trinity College, Cambridge edited Cotes' mathematical papers on his death. The D.S.B. comments: "then in great confusion, (they) were edited by Robert Smith and published as a book, 'Harmonia mensurarum' (1722). This work, which includes the 'Logometria' as its first part (Cotes' only life-time publication in 1714), gives an indication of Cotes's great ability. His style is somewhat obscure, with geometrical arguments preferred to analytical ones, and many results are quoted without explanation. What cannot be obscured is the original, systematic genius of the writer. This is shown most powerfully in his work on integration, in which long sequences of complicated functions are systematically integrated, and the results are applied to the solution of a great variety of problems." "Professor Morgan calls it 'the earliest work in which decided progress was made in the application of logarithms and of the properties of the circle to the calculus of fluents'. It is also the first complete treatise on the integral calculus" (Babson/Newton, First Suppl., p. 29). S.M. Stigler, 'Hist. statistics', 1986, p. 16. Tomash Lib. C184.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition, rare, of this work which contains the first publication of virtually all of Cotes's mathematical work. Cotes (1682-1716) was a brilliant mathematician who assisted Newton with the preparation of the second edition of 'Principia', and wrote its preface. His early death aged 33 caused Newton to lament: "Had Cotes lived we might have known something." "His untimely death accentuated his being one of the very few British mathematicians capable of following on from Newton's great work. His only publication during his life was an article entitled 'Logometria' (Phil. Trans., 1714). After his death his mathematical papers, then in great confusion, were edited by Robert Smith and published as a book, 'Harmonia mensurarum' (1722) [which] gives an indication of Cotes's great ability. His style is somewhat obscure, with geometrical arguments preferred to analytical ones, and many results are quoted without explanation. What cannot be obscured is the original, systematic genius of the writer. This is shown most powerfully in his work on integration, in which long sequences of complicated functions are systematically integrated, and the results are applied to the solution of a great variety of problems. Cotes first demonstrates that the natural base to take of a system of logarithms is the number which he calculates as 2.7182818. He then shows two ingenious methods for computing Briggsian logarithms (with base 10) for any number and interpolating to obtain intermediate values. The rest of part 1 is devoted to the application of integration to the solution of problems involving quadratures, arc lengths, areas of surfaces of revolution, the attraction of bodies, and the density of the atmosphere. His most remarkable discovery in this section (pp. 27-28) occurs when he attempts to evaluate the surface area of an ellipsoid of revolution. He shows that the problem can be solved in two ways, one leading to a result involving logarithms and the other to arc sines, probably an illustration of the harmony of differnt types of measure. By equating these two results he arrives at the formula ix = log(cos x + i sin x), a discovery preceding similar equations obtained by Moivre (1730) and Euler (1748). The second and longest part of the 'Harmonia mensurarum' is devoted to systematic integration. Cotes proceeds to evaluate the fluents [integrals] of no fewer than ninety-four types of fluxions . . . His calculation was aided by a geometrical result now known as Cotes's theorem . . . The third part consists of miscellaneous works, including papers on methods of estimating errors, Newton's differential method, the construction of tables by differences, the descent of heavy bodies, and cycloidal motion. There are two particularly interesting results here. The essay on Newton's differential method describes how, given n points at equidistant abscissae, the area under the curve of nth degree joining these points may be evaluated . . . A modernized form of this result is known as the Newton-Cotes formula. In describing a method for evaluating the most probable result of a set of observations, Cotes comes very near to the technique known as the method of least squares. He does not state this method as such; but his result, which depends on giving weights to the observations and then calculating their centroid, is equivalent. This anticipates similar discoveries by Gauss (1795) and Legendre (1806)" (DSB). 4to, pp. [20], 249, [3], 125, [1], with one folding table (some light browning and foxing). Contemporary polished calf, spine richly gilt with red lettering-piece (head of spine chipped, corners a little worn). A very good copy in an attractive, unrestored contemporary binding.
