Quarto (10 1/2" x 7"), beige medium weight wrappers with black lettering and a central B&W wood-engraving depicting a "rearranging and shifting" mountain side [a vignette from Roughing It]; illustrated with B&W photo frontispiece of Mark Twain, and two other photos of men involved; plus reproductions of several pages from Chapter 34 of Roughing It; large fold-out folio reprint of Twain's letter from the 'Daily Call,' 1863, inside back cover; perfect binding; thick paper covers with lapped edges, Notes, [xii] + 58 pages. Laid in: Bancroftiana No. 52, April 1972; Typed flier on the Keepsake (1p.). Orignally an episode in Twain's, Roughing IT (1872), this story about his Wild West travels (1861-1867) was subsequently released as a short story. Tight, clean copy with bright, unmarked and unfoxed illustrations. Its cover is slightly rubbed with very light soil and a few mini-chips mainly along its upper edge. Very slightly age-toned. The very large fold-out of Mark Twain's letter from "Daily Call" attached inside the rear wrapper is in unblemished, unfrayed, and near perfect condition. Alan C.
