Index. Phonetics is the study of the sounds of human speech. It is concerned with the actual properties of speech sounds and their production audition and perception as opposed to phonology which is the study of sound system an abstract sound units. Phonetics deals with the sounds themselves rather than the contexts in which they are used in languages. Discussions of meaning do not enter at this level of linguistic analysis. Phonetics studies the defining characteristics of all human vocal noise and concentrates its attention on those sounds which occur in the languages of the world. In other words phoneticians try to study how the various organs of speech the lungs the larynx the soft palate the tongue and the lip function in the production of speech. They also attempt to offer articulatory descriptions of various sounds by describing the air stream mechanism and the phonatory and articulatory processes involved. Acoustic phoneticians examine the physical nature of sounds and analyses the speech waves with the help of various instruments. 248 pp.

But Saussure drew a distinction between synchronic and diachronic linguistics which is fundamental to the present day organization of the discipline. Primacy is accorded to synchronic linguistics and diachronic linguistics is defined as the study of successive synchronic stages. Saussure's clear demarcation however is now seen to be idealised. In practice a purely synchronic linguistics is not possible for any period before the invention of the gramophone written records always lag behind speech in reflecting linguistic developments and in any case are difficult to date accurately before the development of the modern title page. Also the work of sociolinguists on linguistic variation has shown synchronic states are not uniform the speech habits of older and younger speakers differ in ways which point to language change. The most important characteristic of Modern Literature is that it is opposed to the general attitude to life and its problems adopted by the Victorian writers and the public which may be termed Victorian. The young people during the first decade of the present century regarded the Victorian Age as hypocritical and the Victorian ideals as mean superficial and stupid. This rebellious mood affected modern literature which was directed by mental attitudes moral ideals and spiritual values diametrically opposed to those of the Victorians. Nothing was considered as certain everything was questioned. In the field of literary technique also some fundamental changes took place. What the Victorians had considered as honourable and beautiful their children and grand children considered as mean and ugly. The Victorians accepted the voice of authority and acknowledged the rule of the expert in religion in politics in literature and family life. They had the innate desire to affirm and confirm rather than to reject or question the opinions of the experts in their respective fields. They showed readiness to accept their words at face valve without critical examinations. 300 pp.

Applied linguistics takes the result of those findings and applies them to other areas. The term applied linguistics is often used to refer to the use of linguistic research in language teaching only but results of linguistic research are used in many other areas as well such as lexicography and translation.
