Ajouter au panierHardback. Etat : New. Adolf Loos (1870-1933) was a flamboyant character whose presence in the cultural hotbed of early 1900s Vienna galvanized the country's architectural landscape. An early, impassioned advocate of modernism, he all-out rejected the grand Secessionist aesthetic prevalent at the time, as well as any hallmarks of the European fin de siècle. Instead, in lectures and essays, such as the milestone Ornament and Crime of 1908, Loos articulated his "passion for smooth and precious surfaces." He advocated that architectural ornamentation was, by its nature, ephemeral-locked into current trends and styles, and therefore quickly dated. Loos, himself a Classicist at heart, argued instead for simple, timeless designs with time-honored aesthetic and structural qualities. In this essential introduction, we explore Loos's writings, projects, and legacy, from his key concept of "spatial plan" architecture to his rejection of decorative fripperies in favor of opulent, fine-quality materials and crisp lines. Featured projects include Vienna's Café Museum (1899), the fashion store Knize (1913), and the controversial Loos House (1912), which Emperor Franz Joseph I would refuse to travel past, bristling with rage at its insolently minimalist aesthetic.

Ajouter au panierSoft cover. Etat : Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition. All near fine. Cream card covers (wraps) with a green title line and a black and white image of a Vienna building. The thick card covers are clean and bright with no nicks, tears or shelf wear. One self coloured mark on the front which is scarcely visible. There is a very neat bookshop stamp on the front page. The 389 pages are totally bright and clean and the spine is tight. There are many absolutely superb black and white photos, some colour photos and many very useful district maps . This book is being sold by a longstanding UK bookseller and NOT a mass lister; which infers that this book is just as described with no nasty surprises. It will be packed well. KINDLY PLEASE note that an overseas order will incur a substantial extra shipping/postage charge, as this book weighs just over 1kg without packing. This is a sumptuous book for devotees of Vienna and an excellent copy in every way. 1st class photography.

Ajouter au panier, Sarnitz, August, 1956-, ed. Drei Wiener Architekten. Three Viennese architects, Wilhelm Holzbauer, Gustav Peichl, Roland Rainer. Vienna : Edition Tusch, 1984, second, revised edition, 111pp., sewn PAPERBACK with stiff covers, very good but with old Institute of Technology stamp on copyright page, previous owner's blindstamp on half-title. Text in German and English in facing columns. Volume consists mostly of black and white photos, diagrams, and sketches. 9783850631488 ISBN 3850631486.
