De Populieren Fluisteren, subtitled Roman uit het leven der vlasboeren, is the debut novel by Belgian author Lode van der Schelde, set among flax farmers in Brabant. The novel is written partly in regional Dutch dialect and presents rural life, family relationships, religion, scandal, crime and tragedy in the traditional Dutch/Flemish boerenroman style. This edition is notable for its decorative Art Nouveau-influenced binding and illustrations by Anton Pieck, including a full-colour illustrated title/frontispiece and numerous monochrome illustrations and decorative initials throughout the book. The table of contents shows eight sections, beginning with Een Voorwagen sukkelt door Vlaanderen and ending with Ecce Homo. This copy is identified on the title page as the Fourth Printing ("Vierde druk"). The work was first published in 1938. The book is an attractive example of an early 20th-century Dutch illustrated literary edition and will appeal particularly to collectors of Anton Pieck, Dutch regional literature and illustrated books. Physical / Condition: Hardcover in the original decorative synthetic-parchment-style binding with red and blue floral decoration. Approximately 309 pages. Illustrated with a colour plate, monochrome plates and decorative initials. The binding shows age-related soiling and staining, particularly to the covers and spine. The spine is rubbed and faded, with visible wear to the upper and lower sections and edges. Corners and edges show general shelf wear. The text block remains generally sound.
