Brown paper portfolio with seven sketches in protective glassine envelope: 1) W.H. Bartlett's Fredericton, New Brunswick 2) J.B. Schell's Charlottetown; 3) W.H. Bartlett's Fish Market, Toronto; 4) W.H. Bartlett's Halifax, from Dartmouth; 5) H.G. Hind's Assiniboine and Saskatchewan Expedition 1858; 6) W.H. Bartlett's Montreal from the Mountain, and; 7) B. Schell's Winnipeg, from St. Boniface ferry landing. All seven prints are very gently waved (slightly creased, in effect) and J.B. Schell's Charlottetown is lightly soiled on the left margin (about 5/16 of an inch in from the edge) but all are certainly suitable for mounting or framing. The original portfolio envelope the prints came in is fanned on the bottom corner and moderately damp-stained otherwise this is a very good set of important early Canadian sketches. From the blurb on the outside of the portfolio (front cover): This portfolio of early Canadian sketches provides an interesting insight into the aggressive spirit and unshakeable faith of the Pioneers of this great country. Sun Life Assurance Company of Canada has been closely associated with the growth and development of Canada since 1871 by providing personal and group insurance to generations of Canadians.
