Includes: The Voice. The Chilterns.… Heaven. Ends: 1914: V. the Soldier. Includes a piece cut from the Times 5.1.1972 re Cathleen Nesbitt an actress who was a close friend of Brooke's. A letter written in period ink writing signed Glanville undated with a b/w real photo of Glanville signed and dated on the back Salisbury Nov 1922. The o/p is also signed Glanville Xmas 1927 to Dorothy ?Stampton Dene. Condition: boards could do with a polish, ingrained dust. Slight rub top of spine. Few minor fox spots opening pages. e/p yellowing. A few on the poems and sonnets have a small pencil tick or a word underlined, not many though. Overall clean, little wear, binding firm, good colour. Published in 1928, this is a finely bound example of the collected poems of Rupert Brooke, bound in a signed full tree calf leather binding bound by Riviere & Son, titled and elaborately decorated in gilt, page edges gilded all-round, inner gilt dentelles, illustrated with two portraits by Sherril Sche…ll, binding has some mild edge rubbing wear, minor marks, else in good solid condition, internally old ownership initials to front endpaper, light marking and foxing to endpapers else in nice general condition. Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. No Jacket. 5th or later Edition. This volume was edited by Edward Marsh, Rupert Brooke's close friend and literary executor. It includes Marsh's standard biographical note, usually titled "Note," which briefly outlines Brooke's military service and his death in the Aegean in April 1915. Published by…Sidgwick & Jackson, the collection contains thirty-two poems. Among them are the five well-known "1914" sonnets, including "V: The Soldier" ("If I should die, think only this of me…"), along with "The South Seas," "Grantchester," and other works. Pages 13-16 pages uncut and left that way suggesting that the book has never been fully read. Likewise, pages 61/63 and page 57 /60 is still uncut page 63 along with several others, leaving them in perfect condition. This, I assume, is the first edition, with 1,000 copies originally printed although this one is not numbered. Octavo format (63 pages), bound in dark blue cloth with a paper spine label bordered in faded red. There is a 'spare' spine title lightly attached to the back endpaper with bright red border trim. Side and bottom trimming is still rough. It includes a portrait frontispiece with a tissue guard. The endpapers are slightly toned, but overall, the copy remains in very good condition. No dust jacket is present. Also included is a newspaper clipping featuring a tribute by Sir Ian Hamilton. Inscription dated 1920 This copy is likely from the 27th impression, dated October 1919. sherril schell photographer (illustrateur).

A striking image, reminiscent of Berenice Abbott's work in its juxtaposition of new and old New York City. Sherril Schell (1877-1964) was an American photographer best known for his architectural phot…ography, especially of New York City. He had a studio in London in the early 1900s-1910s, during which period he took portraits of subjects including Rupert Brooke, but is perhaps best remembered for his iconic photographs of New York's bridges and architecture. Here Schell contrasts a modern skyscraper with a gargoyle, providing an image that reminds one of iconic photographs of the gargoyles of Notre Dame in Paris, but for the New York background. Staining to upper right corner, remnants of prior mounting to rear with adhesive stains showing through Gelatin silver print, toned; verso with caption in Schell's hand in pencil and SIGNED ("by Sherril Schell"). 12 3/16 x 9 3/16 in. Signed.

This portrait of a pensive W. B. Yeats was taken by London-based American photographer Sherril V. Schell (1877-1964), who during the first decades of the 20th century in his Victoria studio executed portraits of several London literary figures such as Wilfrid Wilson Gibson and, famously, Rupert Brooke. Schell has signed the moun…t in pencil, and stamped both the print and mount verso "Photograph by Sherril Schell, 116, Victoria Street, S.W., Telephone:-7144 Victoria". This print was one of several in different poses from the same sitting retained by Yeats himself, has been since in the family by descent. Another image from the Schell sitting was used as the frontispiece for Forrest Reid's monograph, W. B. Yeats, a Critical Study (1915) which was the first of its kind. Platinum print (237 x 193 mm), black thick paper mount. Very slight rubbing to the corners of the print, some very faint superficial scratches, but excellent, the mount a little ruffled at the corners and with some glue related abrasions to verso.

Platinum print (237 x 193 mm), thick paper mount. Glazed, framed, and presented in conservation mount. Slight rubbing to corners of print, a little more so to mount, some glue-related abrasions to mount verso and a few small spots and minor scratches. Very good overall.
