La guerra ebbe inizio quando l'esercito francese occupò la Spagna nel 1808 e terminò nel 1814 con la sconfitta delle truppe napoleoniche ma con il totale dissesto dell'economia di Spagna e Portogallo, crisi che portò ad un periodo di guerre civili fra liberalismo ed assolutismo protrattosi fino al 1850 e all'indipendenza dalla Spagna delle antiche Colonie spagnole d'America e del Brasile dal Portogallo. Lo Schepeler (Göttingen, 1780-Aachen [Aquisgrana], 1849), militare, diplomatico e storico, servì come soldato in Austria, in Prussia ed in Spagna, prendendo parte di persona a molti degli eventi bellici narrati nel presente libro, e fu incaricato d'affari della Prussia a Madrid.
