Ajouter au panierHardcover. Presumed first edition/first printing. vii, [1], 148 p. Illustrations. Aircraft Specifications. Notes. Select Bibliography. Index. In 1927 James D. Dole offered $25, 000 to the first flier to cross from North America to Honolulu. Only two of the seven planes that started made it. From the dust jacket: "From a prospective field of thirty pilots, fifteen entered the race, but only nine were ready for take-off on August 16, 1927. Three planes had crashed en route to Oakland; three participants were dead. Others withdrew, were disqualified, or never showed up. To the cheers of 75, 000 people, eight planes managed to take off into the fog over San Francisco. Tragically, seven more died during the course of the race. Only two planes finished the trip: the Woolaroc reached Wheeler Field in a little over 26 hours and the Aloha arrived a couple of hours later. Fifty thousand people were there to greet them, ." Very good in very good dust jacket. DJ is in a plastic sleeve and has slight wear and soiling.
