Hardcover. Etat : Very Good-. First Edition; First Printing. 314 & [6] pages; In a handsome publisher's deluxe binding: light green half leather over boards with vertical stripes in shades of pink, green and blue on the boards. Minor wear to the binding, with rubbing and minor loss to the corners. Minor crease to the half title (and front free endpaper); minor cracking along the inner hinges of this heavy volume. One of the most significant volumes in Leo Schidrowitz' extraordinary multi-volume moral history of the civilized world ['Sittengeschichte der Kulturwelt und Ihrer Entwicklung in Einzeldarstellungen']. This sixth volume in the series deals with eros and sexuality connected with the port cities of the world, and with travel itself, broken down into considerations of the modern hotel, vehicles, street-life and prostitution. The intial section on the port cities has special chapters devoted to Hamburg, Antwerp, London, Marseilles, Buenas Aires, Havana, Rio, New York and the West Indies. Richly illustrated, including several in colors -- ["Mit ca. 200 ein- und mehrfarbigen Illustrationen und Kunstbeilagen]. The regular copies of this interesting volume were bound in cloth, usually cream colored linen with an illustration on the cover. A small number of copies was offered (at extra cost) in half leather bindings. At least two of the other volumes in Leo Schdrowitz's 'Sittengeschichte der Kulturwelt.' had statements on the verso of the title page recording that 100 copies were issued in the special binding. We have seen another binding, much more conservative and sedate in design on another title in the series -- a very different publisher's binding. But it seems appropriate that this volume would be in a binding entirely aesthetically consonant with the brief flowering of the Weimar Republic, whose liberal attitudes made publications like this one possible. Within a few short years, it all came to an end. Schidrowitz and his firm were closed down in Vienna, Magnus Hirschfeld's Institute in Berlin was closed, and Hirschfeld left on a long lecture tour which turned into a permanent exile. Many books of this sort were burned.
