This is the third volume of the 1639 - 1640 Elzevier edition of the works of Seneca the Elder & Younger (Willems notes a 1640 edition, but not this edition). The first two volumes contain Seneca the Younger, while the…third volume contains the works of the Elder, his father. So this volume, although an odd volume technically speaking, stands alone as complete for Seneca the Elder. A lovely copy in a charming binding. This printing is one of Bonaventura and Abraham Elzevir's famed pocket editions of Latin classics, initiated in 1629 during an expansion of the press. The aim was to ensure wide circulation of accurate texts for everyday use, and the books were printed with engraved title-pages, narrow margins, and a distinctive font of type, cut by Christoffel van Dijck, whose influence on subsequent typographers endured well into the 19th century.

Outstanding provenance: each volume bears the engraved armorial bookplate of Petrus Daniel Huetius (Pierre-Daniel Huet, 1630-1721), Bishop of Avranches, one of the most celebrated humanist scholars of 17th-century Europe and a central figure of the Republic of Letters, with inscription recording his donation of his entire library to the Jesuit House of Paris in 1692: "Ex libris Bibliothecae quam Illustrissimus Ecclesiae Princeps D. Petrus Daniel Huetius Episc. Abrincensis Domui Professae Parif. PP. Soc. Jesu integra vivens donavit An. 1692." Additional ownership inscription "D. de R. 1671" in manuscript on Volume III. Engraving of Hieronymus Wolf on 8th leaf. Hieronymus Wolf (1516 - 1580) was the sixteenth century German historian and humanist who coined the term Byzantium. The first printing of this edition with notes and commentaries was published in 1572; this, the second edition, varies a little in the order from the first. A third, published 1607, left off notes and is quite inferior. Institutional bookplate noting the book was a gift of Michael J. O'Farrell, the first Bishop of the Diocese of Trenton, on the free front end paper. Scarce. Brunet II 588. A 17x11 cm. section of the title page, which includes the printer's device, has been excised, the leaf neatly repaired; top edge lightly trimmed, boards and spine rubbed with scuffing to the top edges, otherwise very clean with occasional cross-references penciled in the margins, binding tight; a very nice copy. Quarterbound later morocco over marbled paper-covered boards.

Carrio, Suffridus Petrus, de gebroeders Fopmans, Guilielmus en Theodorus Canterus en anderen. Van alles beroofd kwam hij in 1567 uit Antwerpen te Douay, en verkeerde daar vriendschappelijk met Philippe de Lannoy, heer van Turquoi, aan wien J. Lipsius zijn bekenden brief de peregrinatione utiliter instituendâ schreef, en wien Scottus zelf zijn uitgaaf van Sex. Aurelius Victor de viris illustribus opdroeg. Ook was hij zeer bevriend met Augerus Busbequius, weleer gezant van Ferdinand en Maximiliaan II bij den sultan Soliman. Te gelijk met hem studeerden te Douay Claudius Puteanus, Jos. Scaliger, de broeders Petrus en Franciscus Puthaeus, Joannes Passeratius en anderen. Na twee jaren te Douay vertoefd te hebben, vertrok hij naar Spanje, en hield zich te Madrid, aan het hof te Seville, Barcelona, Salamanca en Toledo op, knoopte overal met beroemde en geleerde mannen betrekkingen aan, en werd in de laatstgemelde plaats hoogleeraar. Wb, dl 17 s.v.:[Andreas Schottus] SCHOTTUS (ANDREAS), zoon van Franciscius Schottus,… jezuit, in 1552 te Antwerpen geboren, legde zich als jongeling te Leuven op de peripatretische wijsbegeerte toe, en gaf daar vervolgens onderwijs in de rhetorica, o.a. aan Petrus Pantinus, die hem later naar Douay, Parijs en Spanje vergezelde, en ging vriendschappelijk om met de hoogleeraren Cornelius Valerius, Theodoricus Langius, gelijk ook met Justus Lipsius, Lud. Carrio, Suffridus Petrus, de gebroeders Fopmans, Guilielmus en Theodorus Canterus en anderen. Van alles beroofd kwam hij in 1567 uit Antwerpen te Douay, en verkeerde daar vriendschappelijk met Philippe de Lannoy, heer van Turquoi, aan wien J. Lipsius zijn bekenden brief de peregrinatione utiliter instituendâ schreef, en wien Scottus zelf zijn uitgaaf van Sex. Aurelius Victor de viris illustribus opdroeg. Ook was hij zeer bevriend met Augerus Busbequius, weleer gezant van Ferdinand en Maximiliaan II bij den sultan Soliman. Te gelijk met hem studeerden te Douay Claudius Puteanus, Jos. Scaliger, de broeders Petrus en Franciscus Puthaeus, Joannes Passeratius en anderen. Na twee jaren te Douay vertoefd te hebben, vertrok hij naar Spanje, en hield zich te Madrid, aan het hof te Seville, Barcelona, Salamanca en Toledo op, knoopte overal met beroemde en geleerde mannen betrekkingen aan, en werd in de laatstgemelde plaats hoogleeraar.
