Hard Cover. Etat : Very Good. Dust Jacket. First Edition. (London, Lindsay Drummond, Ltd, 1938). First UK Edition in original un-clipped dustwrapper showing price 15s. pp 250. Publisher's light brown cloth titled in gilt to spine with a hint of bruising to spine tips and a little edge discolouration to top edge. Some offsetting to end-papers and spotting to the edge of the text block and margins of the inner text. An excellent dustwrapper with some mild chipping to the head of the spine and some slight staining/fading to the spine. Illustrated by Theyre Lee-Elliott, a prolific 20th century art-deco artist who designed logos for The Post Office and Imperial Airways. With 51 plates, 11 text illustrations and 2 maps, this work is an important and direct insight into the 'Oxford Exploration Club' expedition to Borneo, organised by Tom Harrisson. His fellow explorers included Edward Shackleton, son of the famous explorer Ernest Shackleton, and Patrick M. Synge, cousin of the Irish playwright. Together they spent six months living alongside the country's indigenous peoples, assimilating into an unknown and fascinating culture, even taking up residence in traditional longhouses decorated with chandeliers made from human heads.
