Recital with Daniel Shafran as cellist and Lydia Pecherskaya as pianist, playing Brahms Sonata Op. 99; Shostakovich Sonata Op. 40; Schubert Sonata ("Arpeggione") in A minor; Ravel, Habanera; Granados, Spanish Dance; and De Falla, Fire Dance. The previous month, on January 8, 1960, Shafran had made his American debut in a concert at Carnegie Hall with the Moscow State Symphony, conducted by Konstantin Ivanov, with Shafran playing Tchaikovsky's Variations on a Rococo Theme Op. 33. The program offered here is for his recital, also at Carnegie Hall, in the following month. Quoting from the New York Times review by John Briggs of this recital: "The impression made by Mr. Shafran [in the January concert] and the word-of-mouth reports on his playing could be gauged by the number of well-known cellists in the audience last night. And Mr. Shafran made it clear from the outset that he is a remarkable performer." Both the Shostakovich and Schubert that Shafran performed in this recital were recorded by RCA at the time of his visit to the United States. On p. 14 there is a full page advertisement for RCA Victor recordings by the cellist Gregor Piatigorsky.
