Biography of Edward Timothy "Tim" Hooley (1842-1903), a Western Australian explorer, pioneer pastoralist, and later politician. The core of the book is his pioneering of an overland stock route in 1866 from the Geraldine Mine (near Geraldton/Murchison) northward to Nicol Bay (near Roebourne/Ashburton/Pilbara region). Unable to afford sea transport for stock to his pastoral lease, Hooley led a party with nearly 2,000 sheep, teamsters, and Aboriginal guides inland via the Murchison, Gascoyne, Ashburton, and Fortescue river systems. The successful three-month journey opened a practical, cheaper route for moving livestock to the north-west, aiding the region's pastoral development.…
