Although born and educated in Maine, S.S. Prentiss rose to prominence in Mississippi as a lawyer practicing in Natchez and Vicksburg. He was elected to the Mississippi State House of Representatives for the 1836-1837 term and served in the US Congress from May 30, 1838, to March 3, 1839 after contesting the election of John F.H. Claiborne. A supporter of the Whig Party, Prentiss is best remembered for his eloquent oratory and, in particular, his speeches upon the House floor where, according to legend, Senator Daniel Webster would switch chambers on such occasions so as to hear his colleague speak.
