Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Good. Jacket by Sidney Nolan (illustrateur). 1st Edition. First edition, first impression. Some edge wear and rubbing to top and bottom of jacket and spine, folds and corners rubbed, some overall rubbing as for some reason is usual with this book, not price clipped (25s), initial 'M' in red biro to ffep (could this have been Harold Macmillan's own copy?), internally clean tight and almost square, overall a vg copy for its age. 408pp. The ninth novel in C. P. Snow's 'Strangers and Brothers' sequence. Lewis Eliot walks the echoing corridors of Whitehall observing political intrigues and shifting alliances in this exceptional portrait of the heart of the British government during the Suez Crisis. At its centre is Roger Quaife, an ambitious MP determined to denuclearize Britain. His weapons are persuasiveness and a consummate skill in top level diplomacy. In the committee rooms of Whitehall he plays with the highest stakes imaginable as he challenges the Government's armaments policy. What ensues is a fascinating study of power, personal and political, handled with Snow's inimitable authenticity and intimacy. Deservedly famed as one of the most accomplished political novels of all time 'Corridors of Power' goes behind the scenes of the Cold War with precision and humanity. A meticulous study of the public issues and private problems of post war Britain by physicist, novelist and civil servant C. P. Snow (1905-80).

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Near Fine. Jacket by Sidney Nolan (illustrateur). Revised Edition. First published in as 'Australian Son' in 1948, this is a new revised edition of 1981. Some slight edge wear and creasing to top and bottom of jacket and spine, not price clipped (no published price), gift inscription to ffep, slight browning to page fore edges, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg+ copy for its age. 262pp. This book has long been recognised as the classic account of a turbulent, formative period in the history of Australia. A century and one-third after his death, Ned Kelly is not forgotten, and it¿s hard to believe that Australians will ever forget him. In his own lifetime he passed into folklore, as Max Brown makes clear, so where is he now? This is not an easy question, but wherever he is, Max Brown¿s book is part of the answer. When Ned was alive, and police in two states were trying to find him, he was regularly labelled a criminal, murderer, desperado, villain, et cetera. Respectable society condemned him because they had to. We might say they knew no better. The amazing thing about Ned and his gang, though, is that they convinced a great many people that justice might mean injustice, and vice-versa. Ned was hanged in 1880. A lifetime later, with the world recovering from World War 2, 'Australian Son' was written. Decades later, Max (1916-2003), revised it but didn¿t live to see this later version, which keeps the tradition alive. Tradition? Yes. The famous bushranger, from the poorest of poor families, has given rise to a persisting idea that the apparatus of justice may pursue the ends of injustice, and be meted out to those who, by their own sense of what¿s right, deserve it least (online review).

Hardcover. Etat : Near Fine. Etat de la jaquette : Good. Sidney Nolan (dust jacket) (illustrateur). First Edition, First Printing. Neat gift inscription on the front free endpaper, otherwise the book has a little natural ageing only. Creasing and rubbing to the price-clipped dust jacket, now protected by a clear, removable cover. The dust jacket artwork is haunting and the front cover is unusual in that it does not incorporate the title of the book. Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. 1st Edition. First edition. A collectable copy of the first UK edition of Patrick White's mystical novel set in 1950s Australia, in the original (but clipped) dustwrapper by Sidney Nolan, which is now protected. The jacket has a minor repair to the base of the spine. 'Riders in the Chariot' is a novel set in 1950s Australia, filled with mysticism and suburban life, showing the ignorance and prejudice of people. Externally, smarter than it sounds. There is a neat owner signature to the FEP. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean.
