The author explores the events and motivations behind the creation of a Commonwealth government, shining a light on how democratic ideals spread in southern colonies and challenging the notion that they only existed in New England. Competing wills and political savvy are on full display, from confrontations with the Crown over taxation, to conflicts regarding boundary lines, all amidst a backdrop of financial distress and social unrest. The book draws heavily upon primary sources such as colonial records and letters, shedding light on the motivations of pivotal figures such as Governor Tryon and Josiah Martin. The author's insights add depth to our understanding of the American Revolution, revealing the deep-seated desire for self-governance that existed in the years leading up to the break with Great Britain. The author traces Van Buren's rise from humble beginnings to his role as a political kingmaker and his eventual election to the highest office in the land. The book also explores the tumultuous events of Van Buren's presidency, including the Panic of 1837 and the subsequent financial crisis. The author argues that Van Buren's handling of these crises, as well as his commitment to the principles of democracy and equality, make him an important and underappreciated figure in American history. This comprehensive and engaging biography sheds new light on Van Buren's presidency and its significance for the development of the American nation.
