One of the most prestigious contemporary art awards, the Marcel Duchamp Prize was created in 2000 by the ADIAF, Association for the international diffusion of French art which groups together 400 contemporary art collectors rallied around the French scene. He emigrated to France in 1930 and opened his first studio in Paris, where he designed, conceived, and created his own creations, which he exhibited around 1950 at the Musée Galliera. In the 1960s, he was invited by leading designers (Maxime Old and Joseph André Motte) to join the Société des Artistes Décorateurs (SAD) and its steering committee. He presented his creations at numerous international exhibitions in Paris, Brussels, and Turin. Starting with a wooden chaise longue, noted for its design by ministers André Malraux and Eugène Claudius-Petit, he created the famous Eurolax 1 plastic chair, which would become a staple on many beaches in France and abroad. In the late sixties, he was invited by the Boule School and the School of Applied Arts to give classes to future cabinetmakers and designers. Alongside his creative work, he won the title of "Meilleur ouvrier de France" in 1976 and 1979 and was made a Knight of the National Order of Merit.Text in English and French.…

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. The volume is dedicated to the project of the artist Linda Fregni Nagler concerning a series of Japanese photographs of the Yokohama school (Yokohama Shashin), which have as their subject flower sellers (hanauri), a highly appreciated category of street vendors in Japan during the Edo and Meiji periods. The photographs, dating back to the mid-nineteenth century and collected over a period of 20 years by Linda Fregni Nagler, are accompanied by some works by the artist herself who rephotographed the original albums, printing them in the darkroom and colouring them by hand with a technique similar to that of the period (1860-1910).This intervention gives new meaning to the images, illustrating the history of a specific way of looking at exoticism and otherness. The floral and vegetal theme finds further declination in the precious kesa fabrics of the MAO collection, in the Kimonos, in the lacquers and in the woodcuts presented in these pages.Texts by: Anna Musini, Francesca Filisetti, Cristina Baldacci, Linda Fregni Nagler, Manuela Moscatiello, Roberta Vergagni.Text in English and Italian. Paperback. Etat : New. A multimedia installation of films and videos presents the entire oeuvre of Douglas Gordon (Glasgow 1966), one of the most influential figures in video art.In 1999, invited to exhibit at the Foksal Gallery in Warsaw, Douglas Gordon chose to present his entire body of video work created up to that point. The exhibition was titled Pretty much every film and video work from about 1992 until now'ish. To be seen on monitors, some with headphones, others run silently and all simultaneously, it was conceived as an exploration of the concept of the archive: a composite device in which heterogeneous works are connected in a visual and conceptual continuum. This gave rise to the installation of the same name, which has since been reproduced in many exhibition contexts, renewed and expanded, with the addition of more recent works. Douglas Gordon's works come to life through the reinterpretation and manipulation of heterogeneous visual materials, including famous and forgotten films, historical and scientific documentaries, television series, and amateur videos. Through these fragments of contemporary visual culture, the artist evokes a profound sense of alienation, moving between repetition, identity and that uncanny familiarity that Freud defined as disturbing.Through strategies such as sampling, repetition, slowing down, division, mirroring and desynchronisation, the artist dismantles the viewer's expectations and then recomposes them in a new, often ambiguous and destabilising dimension. Imagination, knowledge and common sense are thus shattered and relocated in a visual universe pervaded by subtle tensions and emotional resonances, capable of questioning and fascinating audiences everywhere.Text in English and Italian.…

Paperback. Etat : New. This exhibition this book accompanied - organised in collaboration with the Embassy of Italy, in celebration of the '2013 Year of Italian Culture in the United States' - was dedicated to the genius of De Chirico. De Chirico was one of the most important figures in Italy's modern art world, who with Carlo Carrà founded the metaphysics movement: a way to express and set down a world that goes well beyond visible material reality, where past and present criss-cross and intertwine, where hopes and dreams coexist. The marvellous sculptures and drawings on display at the Phillips Collection, demonstrate how De Chirico (1888-1978) uses figures from mythology, archaeological artifacts, and historical events to create images that suggest an alternate, mysterious reality. They will absorb the visitor in a learning expedition through a contemporary metaphysical alphabet, one that is deeply innovative precisely because it is able to reinterpret the past.…

Hardcover. Etat : new. Hardcover. The Musee international de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge owns a unique collection of posters from around the world. From the beginning of its history, the Humanitarian Movement uses this support to spread its messages and values. For the presentation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent, the recruitment of volunteers, the request for donations, the call for blood donation, the promotion of hygiene rules, the prevention of diseases or disasters, the dangers of mines or the teaching of first aid, posters challenge the public, inform and try to rally to the humanitarian cause.More than a means of communication, they are also witnesses of an era capturing the events that are shaking the world and the concerns of the regions in which they appear. Mirrors of society, the posters carry with them the history of the Movement, its actions, its necessity and, even more, its universality. The colourful posters of the Red Cross are more than a means of communication; they carry with them the history of the movement Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.…

Hardback. Etat : New. The title of Phoebe Unwin's project holds many different connotations. The 'field' could be a landscape, but also a colour field, or the field of vision. It is an in-between place, a traditional subject in painting, which allows the artist to hover between figuration and abstraction, to investigate the formal aspects of her medium.Investigating the concept of landscape and how the human figure interacts with its surroundings, Unwin uses painting to construct a delicate alternation of horizons, whose varying distances elicit different paces of observation. The layered, porous surface of her works and hazy depiction of her subjects also generate a dynamic kind of vision within each painting, and an intimate link between the works.Through a process that moves from abstraction to figuration, where matter becomes sign and figures swim up out of colour, Unwin creates images that seem to float within an indeterminate space and time. Her paintings are visual places whose possibilities are infinite; the intrinsic story of the works is neither defined nor definitive and new versions of it are constantly revealed, emerging through the viewer's active gaze. Text in English and Italian.…
