Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. No date of publication given, but the previous owner, a Jewish fine arts books expert, Richard Leon Press, has guessed roughly 1930. Ze?ev Raban (22 September 1890 ? 19 January 1970), the illustrator here, was born Wolf Rawicki (Ravitzki), was, according to a Wikipedia entry about him, "a leading pai…nter, decorative artist, and industrial designer of the Bezalel school style, and was one of the founders of the Israeli art world." Bound in what appears to be brown leatherette covers (previous owner said leather), and red-stained along all three edges. Copper-metal plate, stamped, is affixed underneath a cut-out border, effecting a raised illustration of a lounging lover of Solomon. 26 full-page tipped-in color plates with Hebrew text captions and English text translations facing in decorative black and white border. Front paste-down endpaper shows some loss of paper in overall decorative pattern but not much. Gift inscription at first of two half titles has a warm gift inscription dated from Sacramento, 1954. Interestingly, the signature employs "Zeev" as one of the names, but the first of the two names is illegible. Some rubbing to spine head and foot, front joints, else quite solid of exterior and arrestingly beautiful of interior.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.

Unique in the trade, there being no additional copies available currently on-line, only one copy being housed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A lovely exemplar of an unusual item, augmented with a dozen full-page plates and "various other decorations" by H. Granville Fell.… Printed finely on Japanese vellum paper, being a thick, ivory-colored, semi-translucent kind of paper that is fabricated to resemble actual treated vellum. Vellum paper is produced in Japan by way of the long fibers that are obtained from the interior bark of the Mulberry tree. The resulting paper is flexible but tough and durable, the kind of paper one would want deployed on which to print a marriage certificate, a birth registration, a college diploma (Matt Roberts, 1982), or, in this case, a fine book printed by a student-trainee from The Guild of Women Printers. This exemplar measures 11 1/2" tall x 8 3/4" wide. Bound in a cream-colored buckram cloth over boards, with title in gilt stamped to upper front board, and protected in thick Mylar jacket. Slender strips of reinforcing tape at gutters front and rear, barely perceptible. Plentiful decorative initials and other ornaments in the text, plus historiated initials, and fleurs-de-lis at each verse break. Contains a second illustrated title page (tellingly, that adds the sub-title "Which is the Song of Songs). Also with page of limitation, nothing that this is copy #62 of only 100 such copies printed. Complete with frontispiece, an endpiece ("End of the Book"), and the dozen full-page plates noted above. Fell's style is obviously rooted in Art Nouveau; all tissue guards present. At page noting printer (William Clowes & Sons) appears evidence of a removed sticker, unobtrusive. Light rubbing to, even lighter soiling of white buckram cloth (as per usual), with traces of half-inch tear at front upper joint at spine head. Light scuffing to tips, with boards poking through in miniscule fashion, else with a bright, clean, unmarked interior. The previous owner (Phillip Pirages) notes that this copy was to be bound "by one of the Guild's artisans," and opines that the regular trade edition was to be bound by Chapman and Hall but that this copy was perhaps done (handsomely) by "a Guild trainee at the Hampstead Bindery." The founder of the Guild, Frank Karslake, perhaps supervised its binding. The Wikipedia entry for him notes that "The Guild of Women-Binders was a British organization founded to promote and distribute the work of women bookbinders at the turn of the 20th century," helping to "sell bindings produced by women binders already practicing" and that "instituted training programs to teach other women." It mentions an edition of The Pilgrim's Progress produced possibly by Gwladys Edwards, following an exhibition of other women bookbinders' work from 1897-1898. A lovely historiated initial commences Chapter 1, v. 1-7, "The song of songs, which is Solomon's. Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth: for thy love is better than wine." Each chapter with tails and initials, some being historiated. All in, a delightful book, just as wonderful as scarce.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards.
