The book was published in two volumes. The first volume with the subtitle: ¿My Father Bleeds History¿(1986) and the second volume had the subtitle: ¿And Here My Troubles Began¿ (1991). The novel is about the genocide of European Jews. The action is centered on the Holocaust survivor Vladek Spiegelman, who was imprisoned in Auschwitz. His son Art Spiegelman reconstructs the story of his father by interviewing him and taking notes. During the novel the author Art Spiegelman informs the reader also about his mother Anja and himself. First of all, there is the question of how to deal with the medium comic, because comics represent actually funny stories but the Holocaust is anything but funny thus they are extreme opposites. However, Spiegelman started a new era of comics, because he showed which opportunities exist in this medium and introduced the genre to a mass audience. He was able to do this, because he does not want to tell the complete history of the Holocaust but only a story of a survivor. The book includes three different time levels. The first one is the tale of woe of his father, who survives the Holocaust, the second one is where Art interviews his father about his experiences and memories and the third time level acts after Vladek's death and shows Art working on the second volume of ¿Maus¿. Due to the jumping between the time levels emerges close connection between present and past, thereby the story appears truer. The exact title of this seminar paper is Characterization and symbolism in ¿Maus¿ and will deal with the question of what happens with stereotypes of nationalism and how Spiegelman reflect personalities. First, the genre of the book will be examined by characteristics of fables and allegories. Furthermore, the question will be why Spiegelman decided to choose animal figures and how he characterized them and which advantages the choice of animals in correspondence with the medium comic has. The characterization and symbolism will be mostly checked on the basis of the primary literature. Critical voices will be obtained by secondary literature. Moreover, this seminar paper will amplify several symbols and metaphors and ultimately, the last chapter will try to read out a moral and a massage. Questions whether ¿Maus¿ is a biography or an autobiography, yiddishkeit and parenthood will be left out, because it would go beyond the scope of this paper.…

Due to harsh criticism both at home and abroad of the American involvement in Vietnam, the film industry struggled to produce notable Vietnam War films during the conflict. Only in the late 1970s Hollywood came up with significant films that were trying to come to terms with the past. Down to the present day, the film industry has produced a number of Vietnam War films. What is special about these films is that they show a high level of diversity. In this seminar paper I will examine how the Vietnam War is portrayed in Full Metal Jacket and outline its context in relation with other filmic presentations of the Vietnam War. In particular, I will focus on the drafting and military drill of young men, as well as on the effects that the drill and the war itself had on recruits. I will first introduce the historical event the film is dealing with and outline its filmic presentations and film-historical context. Then I will briefly introduce the film and provide information regarding its historical context. The central question of this paper is, which specific perspective is illustrated in Full Metal Jacket and to what extent the film can be classified along other Vietnam War films. In resuming thoughts I will first establish what stance Full Metal Jacket takes towards the Vietnam War and how this perspective is created. Durch den Bedeutungsgewinn der Menschenrechte sind humanitäre Interventionen zu einem festen Bestandteil des Repertoires der internationalen Gemeinschaft geworden. Die Frage, die sich dabei immer stellt, ist, wann sollten Staaten militärisch eingreifen, um Gräueltaten in anderen Ländern zu verhindern? Momentan wird über ein Eingreifen in Syrien debattiert. Einige sind dafür, anderen dagegen, sodass noch keine einheitliche Linie der internationalen Gemeinschaft gefunden werden konnte. Vor diesem aktuellen Hintergrund ist die Fragestellung dieser Arbeit, ob eine militärische Intervention in Syrien gerecht wäre. Ziel dabei ist anhand von Kriterien der bellum iustum-Tradition und der Schutzverantwortung die Möglichkeiten einer militärischen Intervention zu diskutieren und schließlich eine Antwort darauf zu geben, ob nach aktuellem Stand ein Eingreifen gerechtfertigt werden kann. Die Arbeit beginnt dabei mit der bellum iustum-Tradition, die auf römische Wurzeln zurück geht und im Laufe der Zeit von Augustinus und Thomas von Aquin weiter entwickelt wurde. Trotz aller Wandlungen im Laufe der Geschichte strahle sie auf die völkerrechtliche Entwicklung aus und ist auch in der gegenwärtigen Debatte präsent. Darüber hinaus hat das Prinzip der Schutzverantwortung seit der Jahrtausendwende den normativen Rahmen für die Debatte über humanitär begründete Militärinterventionen verändert. Nach der Erfahrung mit Ruanda 1994, als eine Intervention trotz Genozids unterblieb, rückte die Frage nach der moralischen Interventionspflicht stärker in den Brennpunkt der Aufmerksamkeit. Zunächst wird die außenpolitische Situation Großbritanniensim Rahmen der europäischen Integration umrissen. Anschließend wird auf die institutionelle Einbindung der Briten im europäischen Verbund eingegangen und die daraus resultierenden Gründe für die schwierigen Beziehungen genannt. Abschließend wird die neue Meinungsdebatte sowohl auf politischer Ebene, als auch in der britischen Presse genauer untersucht. Dass für eine überwältigende Mehrheit der Bevölkerung ein gelebtes und erfülltes Sexualleben zum Glück gehört, dürfte unbestreitbar sein. Zwar wird auf der einen Seite akzeptiert, dass Menschen auch auf freiwilliger Basis mit sexueller Enthaltsamkeit, etwa aufgrund ihrer Religiosität, glücklich sein können, ein Zwang jedoch, die eigene, von der Natur vorgegebene sexuelle Identität abzulehnen, ist inakzeptabel. Die sexuelle Selbstbestimmung als Menschenrecht hat jedoch einen schweren Stand innerhalb der internationalen Gemeinschaft. Die Auffassung der einzelnen Staaten über den Umgang mit Homosexualität ist höchst unterschiedlich. Im heutigen Kontext spricht man von LGBT, was Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual und Trans bedeutet und somit alle Formen nicht traditioneller sexueller Identität einschließt. In dieser Arbeit möchte ich untersuchen, ob und inwiefern LGBT-Rechte in der Russischen Föderation geachtet, geschützt und erfüllt werden. Dabei werde ich zunächst auf sexuelle Selbstbestimmung als Menschenrecht eingehen. Denn das LGBT heute als eine verletzliche, soziale Gruppen gelten, ist nicht selbstverständlich. Anschließend wird die Situation der LGBT-Individuen in der Russischen Föderation diskutiert, indem zum einen auf die rechtlichen Rahmenbedingungen eingegangen und zum anderen die gesellschaftliche Stigmatisierung beleuchtet wird. Abschließend wird analysiert inwieweit eine Diskriminierung von LGBT-Rechten in der Russischen Föderation vorliegt.
