Ajouter au panierNo Binding. Etat : Good. 1st edition thus. Original single incunable leaf from the first printed edition of the collected letters of St Augustine, containing part of Epistle 186, written jointly by Augustine and Alypius to Paulinus of Nola around AD 417 and dealing with some of the central themes of Augustinian theology: divine…grace, faith, merit, justification and free will. The surviving text develops Augustine's insistence that faith itself is not an independently earned human achievement but a gift received from God, repeatedly invoking the Pauline question Quid enim habes quod non accepisti? — "What do you have that you did not receive?" — and considering the relationship between divine mercy, human will and merit. These ideas became fundamental to medieval Christian theology and later assumed enormous importance during the doctrinal controversies of the Reformation. The edition itself is of major importance in the history of printing: Johann Mentelin was one of the earliest printers active outside Mainz and established printing at Strasbourg during the first generation following Gutenberg; his edition of Augustine's letters is recognised as the editio princeps, or first printed edition, of the collected correspondence. The complete work comprises 264 leaves and was printed in royal folio in two columns of 50 lines using Mentelin's characteristic Gothic type. The present leaf measures 39.1 × 29.1 cm, remarkably close to the dimensions recorded for complete copies, and retains notably broad margins. Its dense Gothic typography, extensive abbreviations and manuscript-like page design vividly preserve the appearance of European printing in its formative decades. Bibliographical references: Goff A1267; GW 2905; ISTC ia01267000; BSB-Ink A-887; CIBN A-708. Good condition overall for an original incunable leaf more than 550 years old: the principal printed text remains substantially complete and strongly legible on both sides, with extensive age-related wear to the generous margins including creasing, small tears and edge losses, together with light staining, spotting and handling marks; these defects are predominantly confined to the margins and do not materially affect the main text block. The paper retains a pleasing early laid texture and the impression remains strong. An important original leaf from one of the foundational printed editions of Western Christian thought, combining very early Strasbourg printing with a substantial passage on grace, faith and free will.
