Oakdale, a town located on the Stanislaus River in the east central portion of the San Joaquin Valley, adjacent to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, California, was founded in 1871. It was an important transportation hub at the junction of the Stockton and Visalia Railroad and the Copperopolis Railroad and the Taylor's Ferry Crossing of the Stanislaus River on the road between Stockton and Los Angeles. The birdseye map, "Panoramic View of San Joaquin Valley Showing Main Highways, Roads and Some of the Myriad Attractions of the High Sierra, its National Parks and Big Tree Groves," was drawn by W. H. Bull. The brochure, issued cooperatively by Stanislaus County Board of Trade, Merced Chamber of Commerce, Madera County Chamber of Commerce, Fresno County Chamber of Commerce, Kings County Chamber of Commerce, Tulare County Board of Trade and Kern County Chamber of Commerce, emphasizes the Sierra Nevada backcountry, including the Minaret Range, the San Joaquin High Sierra and the backcountry of the Kings and Kern river watersheds. The completion of the Don Pedro Dam in March 1923 is mentioned in the text, the Friant Dam is under construction, and the Yosemite Transportation System is still in operation, so this publication was issued after March 1923 and before 1925. The brochure was probably sponsored by the Central Valley counties with help from the Southern Pacific Company who printed this brochure at their Sunset Press.
