Soft cover. Etat : Near Fine. Pages with light age toning; interior clean. Julian Green (1900 - 1998) was an American writer, who wrote primarily in French and was the first non-French national to be elected to the Académie française. Most of Green's books focused on the ideas of faith and religion as well as hypocrisy. Several dealt with the southern United States, and he strongly identified with the fate of the Confederacy, characterizing himself throughout his life as a "Sudiste". He inherited this version of patriotism from his mother, who came from a distinguished southern family. Some years before Julian's birth, when Julian's father was offered a choice of posts (with his bank) in either Germany or France, Julian's mother urged the choice of France on the grounds that the French were "also a proud people, recently defeated in war, and we shall understand one another.".…

Hardback. Etat : As New. Hard Cover. Century 2007. Lavishly illustrated by some of the greatest illustrators of their time. Full Colour illustrations. A beautifully packaged annual featuring the best of the old favourite, Look and Learn, fondly remembered by thousands as the children's classic magazine from the 60s and 70s. It covered a vast range of subjects, from bumble bees to rocket science, from English literature to Greek and Roman legend. But history was its chief concern, and its brilliant illustrators filled its pages with beautiful pictures of the past. This lavishly illustrated tribute to the magazine presents a kaleidoscopic journey through time, whose narrative pauses for occasional episodes from the cult story of The Trigan Empire. Packed with superb illustrations by some of the greatest illustrators of their time, including wonderful illustrations by Frank Bellamy, Ron Embleton. Cecil Doughty, Peter Jackson, and many more. The art reproduction is stunning. 256 pages. Size: 13" x 10" (330mm x 252mm). (2.2). Various (illustrateur).…

Hardcover with Dust Jacket. Etat : FINE. Etat de la jaquette : FINE. First Edition. A lovely copy with contemporary association between two prominent gay artists. Gifted by artist Paul Cadmus to photographer and publisher, Stathis Orphanos: 'for Stathis / a bit of nonsense, / thinking of the /start of a / friendship that / is quite the / opposite. / Paul / 17 ix 86.' With Orphanos's pencil note specifying 'Paul Cadmus.' [12], 3-289pp., 20 B/W line-drawing plates. 12mo, black finished cloth, gilt spine lettering. FINE in FINE dust jacket, exceedingly clean and fresh. 'A funny, and kind of mean, taxonomy, of gay types in London in the Thatcher years' offering a Dante-esque barhopping descent into Hell (a night-club named 'Heaven'). The DJ describes it as 'A combination of drama, diary, documentary and monologue, Queens is the first book to have charted the labyrinths of the metropolitan gay scene. At once acid and sympathetic, it is both an anatomy of a subculture and a virtuoso celebration.' Pitch-perfect for some but too acid for others, the book received very mixed reviews with many angered by the use of negative stereotypes. Signed.…
