Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - The Fine Print of the PhD: What They Don't Tell You Before You SignBefore you spend the next three to seven years earning a PhD, make sure you understand the deal.A PhD can open extraordinary doors-but it can also cost you years of income, career flexibility, relationships, geographic freedom, and opportunities you may never get back.Yet most prospective students make the decision based on rankings, research interests, funding packages, and the excitement of being accepted. That's only the beginning of the story. The Fine Print of the PhD takes a candid, practical look at what happens after you say yes-and the questions you should be asking before you sign.Is a PhD actually worth it That depends.Worth it financially Worth it professionally Worth the time Worth the opportunity cost Worth the risk The answer isn't the same for everyone.Drawing on firsthand experience, decision-making principles, financial analysis, and the realities of doctoral training, this book helps you evaluate the PhD as a major life and career investment-not simply an academic achievement.Inside, you'll explore questions such as: - What is the true financial cost of spending years in graduate school - How much income might you give up while earning your degree - Does 'fully funded' mean what you think it means - How much control does your advisor actually have over your future - What happens if your advisor leaves, your funding changes, or your research doesn't work - How long will the degree realistically take-not just on paper - What happens if you don't finish - What careers are realistically available after graduation - When does a PhD make more sense than staying in industry - How should you compare two competing PhD offers - What questions should you ask a program before accepting its offer This isn't an argument against getting a PhD.It's an argument for knowing what you're signing up for.A doctorate can be one of the most rewarding investments you ever make. It can also be a poor fit if the degree, career path, financial trade-offs, and personal sacrifices don't align with your goals. The difference often comes down to asking better questions before you begin.Whether you're a college student considering graduate school, a master's student deciding whether to continue, a professional contemplating a career change, or someone holding a PhD offer in your hands right now, The Fine Print of the PhD gives you a framework for thinking through the decision with clearer eyes.Don't choose a PhD because everyone around you says you should.Don't reject one because someone else says it's a bad idea.Understand the fine print. Then make the decision for yourself. …

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - You picked up the phone to check one thing. You looked up and an hour was gone. You've blamed yourself for that hour. You lack discipline. You're weak. You should just use more willpower. Every one of those explanations is wrong - and each one is useful to someone else. As long as you blame your character, you'll never study your opponent. So let's study your opponent. On the other side of your screen is a prediction machine with one goal: your continued attention. It runs experiments on hundreds of millions of people at once. It improves every night. And it wins by exploiting a handful of ancient, unpatchable features of your own biology - the same instincts that once kept your ancestors alive. Drawing on decades of replicated research in neuroscience, evolutionary biology, and behavioral psychology, Your Brain on Algorithms takes the machine apart mechanism by mechanism - and hands you the defense. Inside, you'll learn: - Why unpredictable rewards hook harder than reliable ones - the same schedule that runs slot machines, now in your pocket- The difference between wanting and liking - and why 'you keep coming back' proves nothing about whether you enjoy it- How engineered images hijack instincts calibrated for a world that no longer exists- Why bad news holds you longer than good - and how your alarm system gets farmed- Why outrage is a distribution strategy, not an accident- How the feed rigged the scale you use to measure your own life- Why you don't have a willpower problem - and what actually governs the behavior- The hidden overnight bill: the sleep and attention the machine bills while you're not looking Then it gives you the cure. Not moral panic. Not deleting everything. Not digital monasticism. A complete environmental defense you can install in a single afternoon - the Force Quit Protocol - built on one principle: your attention is your property, and it's time to repossess it. No platform names. No fear-mongering. No pretending you'll throw your phone in a lake. Just the exploits, the evidence, and the tools - written to still be true years from now, because your biology won't change even as the apps do. You don't need more willpower. You need a hardened perimeter. This book shows you how to build one.…

Paperback. Etat : Very good. First Edition. Quarto with brown pictorial paper wraps and black spine; 137 pages; illustrations; appendices; 28cm. "This report covers technical progress on the Advanced Pulsed Power Research Program (APP) during the first quarter of FY '81. The overall objective of this program is to develop cost-effective, scalable pulsed power technology to support research in the simulation of soft X-rays produced by exo-atmospheric detonation of nuclear weapons. In pursuit of this objective we have developed a conceptual design for a large accelerator, called ROULETTE, which would produce a 50 TW, 2 MV, 25 MA, 100 ns output pulse. This accelerator would be used for research in intense plasma radiator sources. The principal objective of te FY '81 APP program is to build and test on module of ROULETTE. This module, called EAGLE, is presently under construction." --Introductory abstract. Includes updates on progress of EAGLE's construction, and construction of an insulator for EAGLE, work on the OWL generator, and the Alternate Generator Study. Three technical publications are also reproduced and included as appendices. Unclassified Defense Nuclear Agency report. Very good; wraps show a bit of wear; pages are clean and binding tight.…

Taschenbuch. Etat : Neu. Neuware - Your attention was never free. It was leased - and you never saw the bill. You pick up your phone for a minute and surface an hour later, tired, wired, and strangely behind. You are not weak, and you are not broken. You are the softest counterparty in the largest market on earth: the market for human attention, where your evenings are auctioned by the second and you are paid less than the price of an egg.Rented Minds is the calm, unsparing owner's manual for that market - and the practical playbook for walking out of it.No villains. No conspiracy. No throwing your phone in a lake. Drawing on the oldest books we have - Plato and Aristotle, Franklin and Adam Smith, Mill, Kierkegaard, and the Stoics - alongside the modern science of reward, attention, and belonging, Dr. Sullivan J. Ryan shows how a trillion-dollar machine grew up around a brain that had no time to adjust, and why nobody is driving it. Then he hands you the tools: - The Attention Audit - one week of honest counting that ends the fog for good- The Four Tests - spot a hope-seller, a fake guru, or an empty course in ninety seconds- The Trust Portfolio - whom to believe when anyone can print a credential- The Residue Test - tell real participation from the engineered feeling of it- The Freedom Number - the boring, unbreakable path to money no one can sell you- The Standing Table - how ordinary people rebuild real connection in an age that rents the fake kindYou'll learn why outrage rises in your feed like a crop yield, why the loneliest customers are sold intimacy by subscription, why gurus rent Lamborghinis, and why the exits are all unlocked. And you'll finish with something rare in this genre: a thirty-day plan, a clear head, and your hours back.Your mind was never theirs. This book is how the lease ends.…
