Internally, some light offsetting to eps, an edition limited to just 230 copies, (xxvi), [1], 2-332, 28 plates, of which 8 are coloured, printed by William Blackwood and Sons, teg remainder uncut. Surtees, was an author whose books ran counter to the currents of his age in their lack of idealism, absence of sentimentality, and almost wilful flouting of conventional moralism. His leading male characters were coarse or shady; his leading ladies dashing and far from virtuous; his outlook on society satiric to the point of cynicism. See ODNB.

Robert Smith Surtees was an English editor, novelist and sporting writer. He is remembered for his invented character of Jorrocks, a vulgar but good-natured sporting cockney grocer. This is #180 of a limited editin of 230, describing hunting tours takens by Surtees in the early 19th century. Bound in red linens, with tipped in full color illustrations, deckle edges and an illustrated dust jacket, the book has light rubbing to the boards, as well as light age-toning and foxing. The DJ has some rubbing, light stains and and a closed tear; it is now in Mylar. ; Color and B&W Illustrations; Small 4to 9" - 11" tall; 332 pages.
