Trade Paperback. Etat : Very Good. 2003 Revised Edition. 296 Pages Indexed. This Revised Edition was published in 2003. There is a Preface to the Revised Edition. Many people have heard of Abelard and Heloise as a pair of lovers as famous as Dante and Beatrice or Romeo and Juliet and most know that their story is told in the let…ters they exchanged. Abelard is a key figure, one of the most original minds of that period and that the medieval university of Paris arose out of his fame as a teacher. Heloise too was the widely respected abbess of a famous convent and its daughter foundations. The letters are numbered 1 thru 8 and Letter 1 is Abelard to a friend with The Story of his Misfortunes. Letters 2 thru 8 alternate each writing four Letters. Then there are Letters of Peter The Venerable and Heloise. The book closes with Two Hymns by Abelard. Included are Maps of France and Paris of the time and Notes. It is very surprising that the Letters of Abelard and Heloise have not sooner appeared in English, since it is generally allowed, by all who have seen them in other languages, that they are written with the greatest passion of any in this kind which are extant. And it is certain that the Letters from a Nun to a Cavalier, which have so long been known and admired among us, are in all respects inferior to them. Whatever those were, these are known to be genuine Pieces occasioned by an amour which had very extraordinary consequences, and made a great noise at the time when it happened, being between two of the most distinguished Persons of that age. There are few firm dates in the lives of Abelard and Heloise because they give no dates for any events in their own writings but they run from 1073 when Pope Gregory VII aimed to restore ecclesiastical authority and make the clergy celibate to 1164 when Heloise died.

Ajouter au panierHardcover. Etat : Very Good. Leone Leoni, a novel by George Sand. Reprint published in 1978 by Cassandra Editions of the Translation by George Burnham Ives. Hardcover format. This edition OP. The life of George Sand (Amantine Lucille Aurore Dupin) reads like one of her romantic stories. This novelist, memoirist, literary critic…and political commentator -- a true celebrity of her time -- led one of the most exquisitely romantic lives of any contemporary writer. This beautiful French woman knew many of the intellectual and artistic luminaries of her time; she had romantic affairs with Frederick Chopin, Jules Sandeau, Prosper Merimee, Alfred de Musset and several others; she maintained a close correspondence with Gustave Flaubert and actress Marie Dorvai. Where and when did she find the time - in between her socialist political writings, literary criticism, and whirlwind social life - to compose her many novels? But write them she did, and they were very popular. Perusing "Leone Leoni", one understands (even though it is a translation) the why of such popularity. A clear, but supple prose, enticing the reader with stories that beguile - Sand was no literary want-to-be. TITLE: Leone Leoni AUTHOR : George Sand (Amantine Lucille Aurore Dupin, 1804 - 1876) TRANSLATOR : George Burnham Ives IMPRINT : Cassandra Editions PLACE : Chicago DATE : 1978 EDITION : Reprint of the 1900 ed. that had been published by G. Barrie in Philadelphia. STATUS : This edition OP PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION : Trade hardcover; contains a chronology of Sand's life; pagination taken from a previous and much lengthier book; approximately 5 1/2" x 8 1/2"; gray cloth with small blind impression of a horseman on front board; title, etc. lettered in silver on spine CONDITION -- VERY GOOD -- Clean and presentable with the following noted: EXTERIOR : Light wear along board edges, - slight compression to spine extremities - text-block edges are a bit weathered (light spotting) BINDING : Solid INTERIOR : A small ink mark displays on the first page of the Chronology (not particularly egregious - see picture) - a few small spots, a tiny soft stain or spot extends through a few pages at the top edge (again this is hardly egregious - see picture) - basically clean and presentable throughout .

Ajouter au panierSoftcover. First edition. 8vo. 190 pp. Original paper wrappers. Book is very rare, as OCLC only lists three libraries world wide that own this work. Frontis piece portraying a b/w steel engraving portrait of Goethe mounted on front endpaper. Lovely decorative title page. This is an interesting work, which is a Yiddish translatio…n of "Werther's Suffering and Suicide," Goethe's famous first novel, that tells the story of a young man's severe psychological pain from which he finds relief only by ending his life with a gun. The author asked his readers to respond with empathy to his protagonist's ordeal and thereby assumes a stance, which not only mirrors a fundamental principle of psychological inquiry, but which also helps the reader gain a deeper understanding of the inner workings of human self destruction. Age wear to wrappers; chipping to outer edges. Asmall closed tear on foot of spine. Another small tear on head of spine. Hinges starting. Mounted Frontis piece has become detached, but is present and pristine. Exterior in good, interior in good - very good condition.

Ajouter au panierLimited Edition. Thick Quarto. Limited to 650 copies for England and 350 copies for United States. The present copy is #3 of 350 copies of the American issue, 136pp. text and illustrated with 48 illustrations in color and 357 in half-tone. The most important study of Russian theatre in the early revolutionary years. As Fulop-Mue…ller notes: The revolutionizing of the theatre soon became one of the most important parts of Soviet propaganda, yet it was this that led to Stanislavsky's influence on Vakhtangov who transformed a handful of inexperience actors into a corps of brilliant character actors. This led to the establishment of the Habima in Palestine in the decades before the establishing of Israel. They toured Europe, America and Palestine in 1926 and hence this beautiful book has rare photgraphic images of that era, many of which are found nowhere else. They also include those of Leon Bakst, Stravinsky, Larionov, Anna Pavlova, Karsavina and other important actors, artists and players including marionettes. . Covers also little theatre, art theatre and the development of the architectural styles, ballet, opera and various other costumes, art for scenery in black and white and several in rich color. Much of the remarkable developments in American theatre in the post World War II era can be traced to these major influences. A very good copy bound in maroon cloth, spine lettered and decorated in blue and gilt, shelf numbers to rear of title page, dark black coated endpapers to rear some fading to spine and edges.
